The Germans have a weird attitude to food, that stems from the 1930's and the after war period where food and money was scarce. They have a saying: "Es wird gegessen was auf den Tisch kommt" meaning: "You eat what's being served".
They also tell their kids it's going to rain when they don't finish their plates. As a result, they don't place a lot of importance on the quality of food, it's more important to them that it's cheap. Basically food is a necessesity, not something you enjoy. But they do have some great meals though, especially for christmas:
And nobody beats the Germans when it comes to cakes and bread (well, maybe the Austrians, but they're just stuck up Germans with a weird accent in my book)
