Again the issue is Russia sees Iran as an ally in the mideast. They have worked very closely together in Syria. All Putin want from Trump is to end economic sanctions and halt NATO expansion. Putin isnt interested in being friends with the US because he knows it will not last. What he wants is enough breathing space to implement his plans to handicap future American presidents. On Iran and China both of them buy weapons from Russia. Also if Trump continues to stub his nose at China Beijing will be more willing to aid Iran's military expansion. Remember Russia and China military technology with each other.
No. Russia and Iran are allies in the syrian operation, but they are also regional competitors. Even in Syria, there are tensions between them on the objectives they need to reach. Remember, last year when Iran withdrew its authorization to let russians use its base for operations in Syria. Also, Putin has been talking with the Saudis and he has a good relationship with Israel. Those two are the biggest enemies of Iran.
Russia is playing on both side of the fences. China is not their friend. It just needs them for military technology. China and Russia also have their tensions, especially when it comes to influence in those old soviet republics. China is trying, in the long run, to turn Russia into a vassal state. They don't see Russia as an equal. And Russia does not see China as a loyal friend. For now, they need each other. Russia needs chinese cash. China needs russian technology. But they can betray each other at any moment. It's not a solid alliance.
It's a triangle : Russia, USA and China. You have 3 sides, not 2 (USA vs CHINA - RUSSIA).
