Saw this last week but it's been a bit of a nuisance to post lately lol

Rishi Sunak to weaken City regulation in post-Brexit nod to Tory donors

Ministers are also looking at Solvency II regulation of the UK insurance sector, which could aim to release investment by reducing capital buffers and risk metrics for insurance and pension funds.

The legislation is also designed to facilitate greater trading of cryptocurrencies, which regulators have warned must be tightly controlled to prevent people losing their savings.

In a further deregulatory move, Sunak plans to update the objectives of the financial services regulators – the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority – to “ensure a greater focus on growth and international competitiveness”. Their aims at the moment are to protect and enhance the integrity of the UK financial system as well as promoting competition in the interests of consumers – rather than the economy overall.

Another element of the bill will be introducing additional protections for those investing in financial products to make it safer and support the victims of scams.
The first bit of the snippet was particularly smelly to me; I thought it could be potentially similar to the deregulation that preceded the GFC (I'd just watched Inside Job )

None of this sounds good for consumers imo, and I'm not sure what 'additional protections' could possibly be conjured up, particularly for unregulated products.

And then today we get this:

Cutting City regulation risks another financial crash, say economists

“We wholeheartedly support the government’s aim to stimulate long-term UK economic growth, including through financial regulation,” the letter said. “Yet we believe that competitiveness is an inappropriate objective for regulators.”

News of the pending bill – which comes as the UK aims to replace EU regulations following Brexit – has stoked fears about a regulatory race to the bottom, with economists saying it could force watchdogs to act as “cheerleaders” for big city institutions.

They argued that competitiveness objectives could be a “recipe for excessive risk-taking”, and could create the same conditions that have since been blamed for the 2008 banking crash. “After the last global financial crisis, which cost the world economy some $10tn, it was accepted that a focus on competitiveness by the then Financial Services Authority (FSA) had helped cause the disaster,” the letter said.

...

City groups have, for example, been pushing for a review of capital requirements for insurers and banks that could help free up cash for new investments and loans, and make it cheaper to take riskier bets, since they would have to hold less capital to protect against potential losses.

That is on top of pushes to make changes to a wide-ranging package of regulations known as Mifid II. There are calls for firms to be allowed to bundle customer charges, and for the permanent removal of caps on “dark trading” – which obscure the size of planned trades but can give investors access to better market prices.

It will probably still get passed though.

EU doctors SHUN Britain in Brexit 'exodus' leaving 'dramatic shortage'

EU DOCTORS are shunning Britain after the nation's momentous Brexit decision, leaving the NHS with a "dramatic shortage", it has been warned.

The British Medical Association (BMA) said Brexit had made the UK a “much less attractive place” to work for qualified doctors and professionals living in the EU. And while the total number and proportion of doctors from outside the UK and EU is rising sharply, the number of doctors coming to work for the NHS in Britain from the bloc is falling.

According to London's Department of Health, the proportion of EU medics has more than halved since Brexit was completed around two years ago.
From within the EU, the share of professionals joining England's NHS each year fell from 11 percent in 2015 to 6 percent last year, according to workforce data.

The BMA said: “Without foreign doctors, our health service could no longer function.

“Brexit has made the UK a much less attractive place to work for qualified doctors.”

The BMA said Britain needs more and more doctors from outside the UK and EU to maintain the major health service.

The NHS is now looking to countries such as India, Pakistan and the Philippines for trained medical professionals.

One in three doctors who came to practise in the UK last year came from abroad.

Dr Alexia Tsigka, a consultant histopathologist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals, said the health service was facing an “exodus”.

She told the BBC: “I haven't seen anyone European coming after Brexit, at least in our department. Doctors that have applied to our department mostly come from India, Egypt and some from Sri Lanka.

"Post-Covid, we've also lost quite a few colleagues. We're facing an exodus."

But the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) argued the decline in EU nationals joining the health service could be because of rigorous language tests introduced by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

It comes after the NHS workforce crisis was laid bare when data revealed an alarming decline in medical professionals hired from within the UK.

International doctors accounted for 34 percent of the recruitment in 2021, up from 18 percent in 2014, according to the BBC.

But in the same period, the workforce of doctors from the UK declined to 58 per cent from 69 per cent.

While UK nurses' share of recruitment decreased from 74 percent in 2015 to 61 percent last year.

International committee chair, Kitty Mohan, said the NHS has become “increasingly dependent on international recruitment”.

She said: “The NHS has grown heavily reliant on doctors from overseas who have and continue to make an enormous contribution to our health service.

“This was evidenced during the pandemic as international doctors were front and centre of the battle on the NHS frontline – with a disproportionate number sadly losing their lives to the virus.”

Immigration has increased since Brexit, admits Tory MP

A Brexiteer Tory MP on Monday admitted immigration has increased since Britain voted to leave the EU.

Despite the Leave campaign proclaiming that Brexit would mean “taking back control” on immigration and asylum, and cutting migration to the tens of thousands, the UK is seeing a rise of people coming from abroad.

Neil O’Brien, MP for Harborough MPin Leicestershire. accused Boris Johnson’s Government of “liberalising non-EU migration” since Brexit by ending caps on visas, lowering qualification requirements and removing minimum earning requirements for skilled migrants.

The number of small boats arriving on the shores of Kent had “highlighted” the issue and increased the risk of a new populist party forming in the UK, the former Levelling up minister added.

More than 20,000 people have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this year. Some 607 people made the perilous journey on Saturday alone – the third time the total has topped 600 since the start of 2022.

“Immigration will be one of the hottest issues facing the new Prime Minister,” Mr O’Brien wrote in an article for ConservativeHome.

“First, many Leave voters assumed Brexit would reduce immigration. But since the referendum it’s increased. And people are starting to notice.

“Second, the small boats crisis highlights it. If the new Prime Minister doesn’t grip that, could be the spark for a new populist party.”

The proportion of UK residents born overseas has increased by 7 per cent since 2000.

In 2021 there were approximately 6 million people with non-British nationality living in the UK and 9.6m people who were born abroad, according to Government data.

Some 573,000 people migrated into the UK in the year ending June 2021, compared to 334,000 people who emigrated from it.

Holger Hestermeyer, professor of international and EU law at King’s College London, found that many European countries have seen an increase in the number of residents born abroad.

“The UK does not seem to be an outlier, but rather fits into the Western European context,” he said.

But Mr O’Brien said the UK was now seeing more immigration from “poorer” countries, rather than European areas or Canada, the US, New Zealand and Australia.

“The same very high immigration, but more from poorer countries wasn’t what people wanted from Brexit,” he said.

It comes as a new report revealed a shortage of workers across the UK has been made worse by Brexit.

Data shows that just 43,000 EU citizens received visas for work, study, family or other purposes last year, a fraction of the up to 430,000 Europeans who came to the UK annually in the six years to March 2020.

The British hospitality and support services have been hit particularly hard and labour shortages means some employers are having to raise wages to attract staff, which is further forcing up prices as inflation soars.

It depends on the area still.

London was never with this shyte.

Northern counties are full of MAGA type folks who are getting brainwashed and screwed over, but they are too busy blaming Europe, or black people.
I always forget how small the UK is... i was waiting to hear how the rest of it felt, then realized thats it :russ:
