In the Bret Hart shoots on everybody thread I had made a passing comment about having drinks with him back in early Fall. Didn't think it would get so much attention so I promised I'd make a separate thread with the story. Given the circumstances, just gonna post it here to show how great my GOAT truly is
The Meek Mill/Drake beef was at it's hottest peak. Drake had just dropped Back 2 Back. Most probably saw the picture Bret put up of the OVO Owl congratulating Drake for bringing home another Championship. I had a feeling it was Bret's son Blade's doing... so I had innocently joked on the Instagram post that we should make a gif of Bret putting Meek in the Sharpshooter. To my surprise Blade actually responded to the comment and we had a brief few lines over DM about tagging each other if one of us mock up the gif.
Anywho, a few weeks had passed and Blade randomly messaged me saying they would be in Toronto for the Jays game (Blade, Bret, his Wife Steph, Jade, Dallas and their S/Os) and if I'd want to swing by after the game for some drinks and to meet Bret. I couldn't believe it. Could not even process the question. I had met Bret earlier in the year at a fan expo (the first time I ever did anything like that, got him to sign a custom sweater I made with his black/pink colours, along with a photo op. I thought that would have been my first/last chance to interact with him - so figured why not.) I was wrong. I told Blade it was actually my birthday weekend that same weekend, to which he responded he'd bring some goodies for me.
At this point I'm not sure what was going to happen. What do I say? Will it be a quick hello/handshake/goodbye? I don't know.
On the Monday of the game I get a DM from Blade telling me they are headed back to the hotel and they will be chilling in the lounge and to come by. I decided to make some last minute apparel for the rest of the family along with a couple custom tees for Bret and headed downtown with the Wife and a couple buddies to share the moment.
We get there and I can already see Bret and family by the bar hanging out. I'm nervous as shyt. Blade meets me and we head to his room first as he brought some gifts for me (coupled Bret tshirts and both the OG and new Silver Hitman shades)
We head back down and he signals my group to come over too.
Bret is first to stand up with everyone else as Blade does the introductions. We shake hands and I hand out the apparel I made for everybody, including a baby onesie for the newest addition to the family. I figured that'd be it but Bret then says, "why don't you guys pull up some seats and we have some drinks".... I tried to be cool and fake the "sure why not" face but inside was a mix of (
I sit beside Bret as we order some beers. Him, myself and Steph chat while my Wife/friends talk with Jade and her husband. At this point Blade/Dallas headed out to a local club. We literally chatted for 2 hours about everything under the sun: Toronto/Calgary, Sports, Family etc. Inside I wanted to ask many wrestling questions, but didn't want to bombard him with that off the bat. Tried to talk about more general topics so that Steph could be involved also. In the moment it was tough to even remember all the long standing questions I had lined up for him anyway. I'm far from speechless but my witt was non-existent. Edit: Funny story I actually told him that we met at that fan expo but I didn't expect him to remember me. He asked if I had any pics and I showed him the hoodie he signed for me (which I have framed in my office.) He's like I would have remembered that and apologized that he didn't remember - not that I even expected him to. He said he was kinda off that day because he found out his brother Smith was trying to scam autograph photos with Bret's signature, right before he came out for the session
When we finally got onto wrestling it was incredible to just listen to this man talk, his memory really is on par with an elephant. Talked about the road, Austin/HBK memories... the 97 USA/Canada storyline. We chuckled about the fact he's actually half-American which no one seemed to know. The Hogan racist rant was still sort of fresh so that was a topic also. He said he was working on a new cartoon drawing based off that, but not sure if he will post it when he finishes it, lol.
Was about 12am by this point, and they were ready to head up to their room as they had a morning flight. I covered the tab (worth every penny) and as we get ready to exchange goodbyes, Bret voluntarily asks if I want him to sign anything, along with offering to wear my brand's apparel for a photo op. Didn't want to impose, but could not refuse this offer. So he signs both shades for me (one in my name, another in my company's) along with taking multiple photos with me, along with some group shots rocking the apparel.
Told him I'd love to pair up and maybe do some Hitman/Toronto crossover apparel for him.
And that's when he gave me his direct cell number...........
I never texted since (only the test texts we did that night), but I think today I will for the first time after this heartbreaking news.
I know not everyone is a fan of the HitGOAT, but whoever yours is I wish you to have the same kind experience, or any idol for that matter. Something I'll never forget, which makes today's news that much tougher. All class and incredibly down to earth.

Bret in 97 was legitimately on his way to becoming a goat contender. his promo game had improved leaps and bounds and he really came off like a badass motherfukker you didn't wanna mess with. he was on FIRE that year. sucks that it was such a short run and fizzled out once he went to WCW.
