I'm late but the "Average American makes 50k" thing is disingenuous at best.
First of all that's household income. As in combined wealth.
Secondly, the 1% or so of Americans that are wealthy skew those numbers as well. If you don't count those 1% of Americans the average goes down to.....just over 30k.
I still maintain that the majority of people who think $15 a hour is chump change live in expensive cities and/or have serious debt. (Most likely from school)

Using this calculator, it tells me that what I can get for 30k in my general area I would have to make 47+k to get in LA.
