Here comes the random coli breh that always shows up in each and every tech thread like

":whoa: I hear what yall saying but you don't want this life"

:deadrose: if yall can't see the game by now, I don't know what to tell you.

There's folks out here trying to actively discourage other ppl from entering the field.:pachaha:

With that being said, I've communicated with breh in the video before. He's legit. :ehh:

I think he just wants dudes to be realistic.

I’m not going to speak for OP but I’ve found that people with degrees hate to devalue their degrees by thinking ‘anyone can do this’.

And often those same people are in charge of hiring and actively gatekeep and keep out people with no degrees.

I heard it all the time in when I started trying to break into software. That my completely unrelated degree (PoliSci) would hurt me. I’m now an executive at a software company and those same bums have barely moved up the ladder.

:yeshrug:

Make your own path in this life.

Edit: I’ll also add that when I’m hiring I’ll only look for degrees when the persons portfolio/github/whatever doesn’t demonstrate that they have the competencies that we’re looking for. And I tell all of our recruiters that degrees are only to be considered in lieu of a portfolio or projects when screening.

This is what I'm saying. Obviously Esco (the breh in the video) is the cream of the crop, top of the echelon.

However that doesn't mean that a dedicated breh with an interest can't get out there and learn and get extremely close to six figures or above.

And for the random breh, getting somewhat close to six figures will have him sitting pretty compared to what he's made doing previous jobs in his life.

I want more of us in this field. Esco does too, its the reason he did this video.

Can you imagine a world where there's 500,000 black ppl pulling six figures from tech?

Wait, I'm thinking too small. Can you imagine a world where there's even 2 million ppl pulling over six figures from tech?

I believe that if/when that happens, our community might just start to look a little different... in a good way.

How much of a setback is it compared to having to do a 4 year degree and taking student loans?

About 10 years. What I make, now, is what I should have been making back in the mid-2000's. I say 10, but I paid for my degree so, if you take loans, add another 3-5 years to pay-off the debt along with the lost time.

This is dependent on your occupation and salary, of course.

Likei said I started out in the industry with NO DEGREE. Its a lot harder to get hired without one, some places wont promote you without one, and some places wont even consider you. I know what its like to work on certs AND a bachelors. Get hired however you can but don't assume a bachelors is optional.

EDIT. I got hired during the Dot Com bubble on certs when lots of people were using college drop out-to-billionaires like Bill Gates as an excuse to skip college. When the bubble burst we were the ones getting fired and not being able to find jobs.

Good for him but I don’t recommend that route. I started out with no degree it’s definitely a setback.
This is false and I’m in IT with a comp sci degree…it’s ultimately about selling yourself and networking, if you can learn on your own, post projects you’re working on and worked on, and build up a network of like minded people in the industry you’re trying to get into via social media, create a impressive resume and treat interviewing like a 9-5, you’ll land. A traditional college gives you access to all this, and internships but many people have the mentality that allows them to do this without the guidelines of a college.

Y'all need to cut this fukkery out. Cacs, Chinese and indians dominate the tech industry and we're barely a footnote.
Everywhere i work chinese, cacs, and indians look up to me. Sit the fukk down.
