RIP to Hugo. Was he a perfect leader? No, but his positives outweighed is negatives. He did a lot for poor Venezuelans

nothing but propaganda

My cousins projects got free heating for 4 yrs, before he moved to the burbs thanks to Hugo. He don't live there anymore so I don't know if Venezuela still provides but damn. Hugo was that nikka. :to: He side stepped the govt just to help blacks and hispanics in the inner city. I wish more govts abroad would do the same for us. We out here getting thrown in the bushes by our own officials.

During Bush.....

Many poor Americans in colder climes will doubtless be dismayed to hear that shortly after ringing in the New Year, Congress and the president have decided to cut 25% from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, (LIHEAP) showing once again their preference to default on the needy and vulnerable rather than asking the most powerful and wealthy to make even the smallest sacrifices.

Far more welcome news came from Citgo Petroleum Corporation, a subsidiary of Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, which announced that it would be continuing its six-year-old program of providing heating oil to poor Americans free of charge. The contrast between the values displayed by the American and Venezuelan governments – the “good guys” and “bad guys,” respectively, of the American political consensus – could not be more striking.

Venezuelan national poverty statistics under Chavez. Obvious huge downward trend. Source is the World Bank as well, if its propaganda I'm open to someone showing me numbers that contradict this.

Many countries in the region have done similarly, I think Brazil has probably been even more succesful while also better managing their economy. Still don't see how anyone can dismiss the numbers as far as extreme poverty goes in Venezuela.

I think the exaggerated vitroil toward him is bizarre and is a direct result of his views vis-a-vis the U.S. As far as repressive measures goes he's hardly amongst the worst. The Americans have good relationships with guys who have much worse records. A very useful comparision is to the recent death of Ethiopia's Meles Zenawi. Much like Chavez he had his fair share of supporters and detractors, and was a polarizing figure. He also had a more repressive record than Chavez, yet he got flowery eulogies in death. Susan Rice even called him a close personal friend lol! Can't be bothered with people acting like Stalin just died.

Listen, I was a big supporter of Chavez. I thought he was going to bring in some European style socialism, but he was an abject failure. He was too much on Fidel's jock and missed out on a golden opportunity.

I DONT think that's worthy of cheering for his death though. He was just a subpar leader.
an incredibly subpar and superficial leader who doesn't deserve vitriol or high praise. this is like gerald ford dying tbh. but eulogizing him makes brehs feel like revolutionaries
Facts always get in the way of Chavez's "greatness"

in brazil, the economy has improved and hopefully will continue because the legislature is realizing it needs foreign investment. they know their pittances to the lower classes aren't something the country can actually stand on. it's political theater.

just like lula in brazil, chavez gave things to people and declared it justice, instead of instilling long-term solutions. it's all veneer. people are happy enough in a short period of time to re-elect him, and he was smart enough to take advantage of the US starting a needless and arrogant war and botching the one in afghanistan.

all these guys, from castro to chavez to lula, all the pink tide guys are fukking con men who undercut socialism far more than any right-wing movement ever could. fukk them, dead or alive, they live(d) in palaces while most of their subjects live well below modesty. when you take over from mafia types and big oil, it's not hard to make yourself look good. of course it also helps that many cant resist hero worshiping

hilarious how the same people saying democrats keep black people chained to their party with cheap concessions praise the guys who operated their respective countries pretty much solely on that basis.

and yeah yeah the US (and ALL of their allies by default. all of them.) is friends with bad leaders, fukk them too, i have no dog in this fight but the truth.
