It makes perfect sense when they are the ones acting like adults. They're letting the US know they'll do this as a warning. Sunnis and Shia did not "unite" to fight the U.S. You had Sunnis fighting because of the loss of power plus the Sunni terrorists flooding in after the occupation. The Shia militias were supported by Iran to attack us, but the Sunni and Shia militants were not "united".
You could look at all of the sectarian violence throughout the whole occupation, at times Iraqis were fighting each other as much as they were fighting us.
