Likely due to "America" being a colloquial term to refer to North America. Moreover, continental theory is a 19th century phenomenon.

Did your people's even not want to bother dealing with the logistics of looking after you on school breaks and ship you off to Jamaica for a few weeks when you were a kid?

Of course we got sent back for the summer usually under the excuse of "you too rude" and need some old country ways, but looking back on it it was cuz our parents knew a round trip to ja was cheaper than daycare for the summer.

I still send a barrel every christmas for new years parties. I got sent back to kingston to live w the father i barely knew cuz i was a wild boy in 5th grade, and it was night and day. I literally went from single mother in a single bed apt to a mansion w a maid, gardner, driver. I went to a private school called Hillel.

But seeing the level of inequality just within my family on the island, who didnt live on a hill, who lived near gullys and garrisons, touched my heart. I related to the street people. I still do. I dont fit in the bougie jamaican uptown crowd. I was already a street kid from america, i would always send the maid home and cover for her because my father was a little tyrant in that house.

Yes bc DR is in the Western World/Americas and u are African descent so technically ur a Dominican that counts as African American .
