What is this Simon Cowell stuff y'all are on... I guarantee you, most listeners are not dissecting Monica's music, or Brandy's either for that matter, based on this meticulous stuff. @dora_da_destroyer is correct about this- obviously having a good voice is important, but listeners of music do not spend this much energy about any of this stuff. If that was the case, Janet Jackson wouldn't have blown, Aaliyah wouldn't have blown, MJB wouldn't have blown, etc...

This.

I've only seen Brandy stans do that. Years ago, right around Afrodisiac, Brandy stans were out in full force. I remember a Brandy stan posting a list that contained the vocal range for nearly every R&B and Pop vocalist of the past 20 years. It listed octaves and how many registers each artist had mastered. It was crazy. I never seen anything like that before.

But sounding better =/= better singer/vocalist. 2 different things
They seem to think that more popular = better singer.

It's the idea that there are no objective metrics in the assessment of who's the best singer. Anyone can decide based on how they feel.

I can decide that I'm a better singer than Tank because I like the way I sound better. Totally subjective.

culturally, only mary j is decisively ahead of them in the '90s out of those names.
:dahell: Toni Braxton?

Definitely. Mary was still selling out arenas just last year

I don"t see how selling out arenas last year is the determining factor on who was a cultural household in the 90's.

Mary J is bigger than Toni right now, but she wasn't in the 90's. When it comes to the 90's, Toni is bigger.

Why limit it to just the 90s tho? Mary was bigger in the 2000s. Culturally as far as R&B goes ain’t nobody fukking with her or Kells over the past 30 years. Toni might’ve sold more albums but Toni also crossed over into another market that Mary never did. But if we talking strictly black folks Toni was never on Mary’s level. She’s an icon while Toni is a legend

I only talked about the 90's because that's what homie was referencing to.

The past 30 years? The past 20 years, yes. 30 years, Mary? Nope. Mary did not have the domination of Kels to claim such a long reign. Mary ruled the 2000's, not the 90's, not even close. From 90 to 00, Toni dropped two mega RnB classic that destroyed the charts worldwide plus a big commercial success worlwide. Mary was not on that level in the 90's. She was a big name, but she was not a dominating force like Toni or Mrariah. She can't claim the 90's in her reign. That's re-writing history.

When it comes to pure RnB, Toni is either equal or superior. Mary mixed RnB with Hip-Hop since the 90's, Toni did not; that's why they used to call her the Queen of Hip-Hop/RnB not the Queen if RnB.

Toni albums were more traditional RnB than Mary's. Toni did not have the Hip-Hop vibe like Mary.

Remember we are talking culturally
:sas1:

Toni and even Mariah was never as big with black folks as Mary. If you wanna talk about the pop charts than sure they were bigger than her. They were getting played on radio stations that Mary wasn’t. You’d never hear Mary in the dentist office but you’d hear them. But that’s not the point. Remember we are talking culturally

Also Mary’s first 3 albums are better than any album Toni or Mariah ever put out. Even Brandy and Monica would give Toni problems so she damn sure ain’t seeing Mary

Culturally, in regard to the 90's, Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill (I view her as more Hip Hop than R&B) were huge. They were game changers and really shifted R&B.

If by culture you mean Hip-Hop or 'urban". Yes. Mary was more in tune with that. But if you mean black. Nope. Mary was not more listened to than Toni IN the 90's by black people. Let's not change history. Toni peak was in the 90's when RnB still existed in the mainstream without Hip-Hop. Toni was not doing feat with rappers left and right but she was in the culture.

Toni first and second album were pure RnB.

Black women play the shyt out of Toni in the 90's. Not many youngin/teeangers because she was not Hip-Hop. But middle age black women and men played that shyt.
Mary was mixing her RnB with Hip-Hop. I'm sure Rosenberg know more about Maty than about Toni.
Toni was not under Toni. She may add more white listeners, but she did not have less black listeners.

When it comes RnB charts, Toni landed 9 top 5 singles in the RnB charts with her two albums and Mary had 11 with her 4 albums. If you ass that Toni sold more cd's.

And Toni was hotter :sas2: (before the surgeries:snoop:)

Sure in her prime Toni had hits that charted higher and albums that sold more. But in the grand scheme of things her music isn’t as timeless as Mary’s and she never resonated with fans as much as Mary. Women worshiped Mary becuz she was more relatable. Toni just made music that people liked. In a Versuz format I’m not sure Toni has one song that Mary couldnt beat. Mary was much more versatile too. She has plenty of traditional R&B shyt to go along with the hip hop influenced stuff

A Toni vs Mary J will be a very good versus. I'll love to see it. It's true that Mary has the Hip-Hop bag that Toni doesn't have.

Do you think Mary can beat Un-break my heart?

Mary would smash Toni in a Versuz format. Let’s put it like this. You’ll hear Mary at a cookout but you won’t hear Toni. You’ll hear Toni at the supermarket but you won’t hear Mary. I’m not even sure Toni wouldn’t have trouble putting together 20 songs for something like that
:heh:

And Mary has quite a few joints that would beat Unbreak My Heart. Especially Not Gonna Cry

Not gonna cry ain't beating Unbreak my heart. :usure:

Toni has sold more albums than Mary, has more top 5 singles than Mary, and he's still touring like Mary but she would be smashed by Mary? Not lose but smashed? :usure:
