I guarantee you, most listeners are not dissecting Monica's music, or Brandy's either for that matter, based on this meticulous stuff. @dora_da_destroyer is correct about this- obviously having a good voice is important, but listeners of music do not spend this much energy about any of this stuff. If that was the case, Janet Jackson wouldn't have blown, Aaliyah wouldn't have blown, MJB wouldn't have blown, etc...

It doesn't matter if most listening do or don't dissect it like that. When taking about who's the better singer, the technical aspects have to be brought up.

Just like if you're debating who's the better rapper (lyrically), the technical aspects have to be brought up.

If you think Monica sounds better, then that's fine. Just say you like her voice more and leave it at that. It doesn't make her a better singer.

breh, you're taking colloquial talk and wanting to apply literal translation to it. most people simply say whoever sounds best is a better singer. just like people who say pac is the best rapper, it's clearly for a whole slew of reasons unrelated to the all the technical components of being the best rapper (we know he wasn't the best lyricist, didn't have crazy flows, etc)

no I never sound that. I'm saying because YOU think someone SOUNDS BETTER doesn't mean they're a better singer.

I had this argument the other day with Mariah vs. Beyonce. The person's argument stemmed around how they didn't like Mariah's voice, so Beyonce is better. Nevermind the fact that Mariah has 5 octave vocal range to Beyonce's 4, can hit more notes, go higher and lower.

Same with Brandy and Monica. Monica’s voice (while very good) is pretty 1 dimensional. Brandy has way more range and hit way notes than Monica.

I'm sorry, but singing really shows how little people actually know about/understand music and just hide behind the "music is subjective" narrative. Which is one of the biggest myths about music, and really any art altogether
