I’m not that big of an Aaliyah fan but
This.
Aaliyah definitely wasn't out of the picture. Aaliyah dropped, then Brandy. Aaliyah still had big songs during Brandy's late '94 run and when Monica came on the scene in 1995. In 1996, Aaliyah had the lane to herself with
One In A Million, which arguably was more popular as an album than anything Monica and Brandy ever did. 1996-1997, Monica and Brandy had kept us fed with soundtrack songs. Then in 1998, Brandy and Monica returned with their sophomore efforts that launched with "The Boy Is Mine". Meanwhile, Aaliyah was on her soundtrack steez with "Are You That Somebody", which was massive. It was arguably as big as any hit Brandy or Monica had that year. You couldn't turn on the radio or TV without seeing it.
None of them would be who they were without the people they had around them. I mean, Monica got Missy to produce for her, which extended her career into the 2010's. This is the same Missy who wrote for Aaliyah. The same Darryl Simmons who produced "The One I Gave My Heart To" for Aaliyah, produced some of Monica's biggest hits as well. Diane Warren wrote for all three of them.
