Do your homework on George Benton and you'll see why it's called the Philly Shell. And don't come back saying "I knew this already". Because its obvious you didn't.
thats pretty cool i didnt know geroge benton had a move named after him. benton was a really good fighter he beat giardello who i think is a top 3 middleweight p4p i have him over hopkins. i'm not sure why it would be named after him though a lot of guys a lot more well known than he was that turned the shoulder in and rolled away from right hands a lot earlier than when he was fighting like archie moore or joe walcott
jack sharkey vs mickey walker 1931
its funny because if you look closely you see walker bringing his right arm across his face after he misses the right hand which is a defense you saw guys like archie moore use a lot and a lot of other old time fighters that nobody today uses. the problem with it is it leaves your liver completely exposed but the reason fighters would do it though is because that little uppercut you see here after missing a right hand was such a common move back in those days, so much that guys needed to create a defense against it, and this was it. the glove and arm gets brought across the face like a face bar to stop that uppercut. its a clever move i wish guys would have the sense to realize to do this against floyd mayweather but they either dont or cant. but the whole reason for all this to begin with was because the "shoulder roll" or "philly shell" was so common in the first place and was natural to come back with that right uppercut with it.
if you watch a fight like georges carpantier vs jack dempsey which was a fight that happened in 1921 you will see a lot of shoulder rolling. i like george benton but its not fair for him to take all the credit like that
