RIP Fresh RIP Doe RIP Phat
I finally realized why the show feels different and kinda off now.
Boondocks has always had hella pop culture references, but they were usually references that only people engaged in black culture would understand.
References to black cult classic movies like Juice, State Property, Friday
References to And-1 streetball, Good Times, Sanford and Sons
Hip-hop//R&B references to Wutang, Wayne, 50, DJ Vlad, Mobb Deep, Little Brother, Pac, Cee-lo, Soulja Boy's famous youtube rant on Ice-T, Superhead, Big Tigger, BIG, Tribe Called Quest, The Hot Boyz, Usher and R.Kelly
Even "nikka that's not Oprah that's Maya Angelou" was something only a black person could have wrote.
Boondocks was a show about black people that was clearly being made for black people, with no fukks given whether or not non-blacks would catch the references.
Now they're trying to make it more like South Park ("But with black people!") focusing on American pop culture overall, and that shyt is wack.
Boondocks and South Park both had a Tyler Perry episode, but the differences in understanding Tyler Perry role in black culture was vast. South Park just said Tyler Perry makes bad movies but black people love them, they had Token as a TP fan, when most black people know that majority black males don't fukk with Tyler Perry movies. The Boondocks was able to breakdown why Tyler Perry movies were bad critically and culturally, and both Riley and Huey were both on their fukk Tyler Perry shyt for different reasons though.
I was one of the guys defending this season, but I can't deny that it has changed anymore. Still some gems here and there but it's watered down overall.
Boondocks was a show about black people for black people, now it's just a show about black people.
And people are right saying that transition started with Season 3, it just wasn't as bad or forced. I'm pretty sure that's why Aaron was like this isn't my creation anymore and delayed production/ left the show.
