we're only 13% of the population and not every black person is going to want to watch this. I'm black and I dont watch a single one of these shows. why would we be surprised other races find things we create interesting? Outside of sports I dont watch much tv at all though :yeshrug:
This. I only watch Atlanta in this list...I've a couple episodes of others (Blackish, Rosewood) but you can't watch everything. And I know some posters in here will make this negative but we can't ask for more black roles/shows in Hollywood and then get upset when non-blacks watch it.

This is good news, as it means we can create and make bank off our own media. Problem is, not enough black people are making money off of it. It has to be top down...
ownership, makeup, tv crews, marketing, etc. If you can get the production values of the shows mentioned, why shouldn't one be able to do Byron Allen type shyt on the
regular? Especially when you consider how much black culture influences the internet trends, It seems a no brainer that with a concerted effort, media can be monetized
by the makers.

As someone who writes fictional narratives, this is the best results you want at the end of the day.

and I say this not on some "OMG guise, art can like, totally erase the color barriers and shyt yo, like, dope" delusions that maybe 10% of the concentrated populace believes, but more so on the fact it's coming from a place of relateability on a general human experience.

It's like how we as black people can watch shyt like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Clerks, Broad City, Fight Club, Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind and it have us :wow: on our minds on a sporadic basis, reaffirming how we already looked at the outside world, comparing it to past experiences, feeling that actual human connection.

The fact that you have people like Donald Glover or Issa Rae crafting works that's striking a nerve with non-black people is extremely telling; Now of course there's gonna be some laymens, dullards, Nordstrom liberals and gleefully bigoted fukks lauding their works as some new form monolithic black experience. But their self-appointed expertise should not deter any present or future content creators displaying their experiences to the world and how it responds.

I get that I'm probably coming off like a "kumbiya c00n" or whatever the fukk, but I'm at the point where I just don't fukking care anymore.

Nah, i read you clear.

The thing that made things like the Cosby Show, Fresh Prince, etc do well, and be a significant cut above lower tier shows (imo) like the Jamie Foxx, Wayans, Steve Harvey etc was that these were just families at the end of the day.
Black families, but things they went through resonated beyond the black American experience and into just this is some ish that families go through.

Not to lose sight of the fact that the lens offered was black, and there were certain things that are particular to the black in america experience.

So thats why i like Blackish so much. Even though Dre is set on being blackity black, the end of the episode crossover ties it into the general american experience pretty brilliantly, usually.

Now, if only we could get shows of a similar quality to be developed under Oprah/ Tyler Perry studios. That's the future of Black media.

Us controlling every aspect of development and production, and choosing the stories told about us.

Cosby show helped NBC

This is nothing new. shyt the Cosby show, different world, Yo MTV Raps, in living color and Jefferson's were all mostly black shows that large amounts of non black folks tuned in to watch.

Also what scandal, rosewood and how to get away with murder concepts are not new. These are basically white shows but the stars are black. Only difference is that these shows are not comedies but are dramas.

We can look at comedies like different strokes, gimme a break and Webster where the stars on the shows were black. But the show was basically white comedies. They have just flipped the script now.

However I still believe this shyt should not be celebrated because we always know that Hollywood and media use black folks to get their ratings up then kick black folks to the curb when they are done with them.

Basically almost every network on free tv and cable have done this shyt.

Also let's not forget non black folks been watching black folks on tv since Amos and Andy. They have never had a problem watching us on tv (as we see everyday with sports). As long as we fit with their view of what black people should be / do and as long as it ain't too many black folks on the screen or too many social issues that effect black folks is being talked about.......then these folks are fine with watching us.

facts!!!

a lot of black shows have saved network ratings, if you wanna be real

And a lot of black shows profits benefited white shows..

I guarantee black shows are produced at 2 times lower than white shows and when the proceeds come in they go into white shows and movies
