The Post and Courier in Charleston, SC did a lengthy multi-part story on North Charleston High School, Left Behind: The unintended consequences of school choice Two-thirds of students zoned for the school left to attend magnets, charters, and other schools. The kids left behind are mostly black and poor. The district has the best and the worst schools in the state.

The average ACT score at North Charleston High is 13.4.

Perhaps Chicago Public Schools is treating Dyett like the International Olympic Committee treated wrestling. For years the Olympic Committee asked wrestling to change its rules to be more viewer friendly and to involve more women in decision-making positions. Wrestling never made any changes, so the IOC kicked them out of the 2020 Olympics.

Needless to say, wrestling got right on the changes and was reinstated into the Olympics seven months later.

Dyett to reopen as neighborhood arts school
17 hours ago

Dyett High School will reopen a year from now as a neighborhood high school, but not with a focus on green energy, as community activists have been demanding for years — most recently through a hunger strike that is now on its 18th day.

Nor will the Washington Park school have a focus on sports business, as the former principal proposed, or become a privately run contract school focused on the arts, as an arts organization proposed.

Instead, CPS officials announced Thursday, Dyett will be an open-enrollment, arts-focused neighborhood high school and community innovation lab. CPS officials said the school will keep its name, thereby continuing to honor the legacy of Walter H. Dyett, a CPS music teacher credited with producing some of Chicago’s best jazz artists. [...]

Education is an economics issue in general terms. You want better schools you need a wealthier community. Kids with financially stable homes are generally gonna do well in any school you put them.
I made a post that expands on this idea in that umarr johnson
thread.
It's like people don't want to touch on the economic aspect
of the problem because it completely goes against the "bootstraps" argument.

It's a chicken-egg arguement. People like to look at education as a way to prosperity, when it's often a better reflection of existing circumstance. Teachers in high performing county's aren't as a whole doing much different than teachers in moderate performing counties. It's often repeated in education circles that it's easy to teach smart kids, that applies just as well to financial circumstance. It's easy to teach well off kids.
