I think the "DEI hire" attack does more harm than good, so it should be dropped off that alone.
I know a breh who benefited from newly created voluntary training and a mentorship program. I'm sure it was a part of a "DEI" effort. "DEI" doesn't necessarily mean "beneficiary of lower standards". Although it might sometime, I suppose. I'm not sure DEI has a strict enough definition to nail it down. It might simply be "putting historically disadvantaged people in exclusive spaces". But the devil is in the details.
