He's 10. you are right that I can't watch him 24/7, but you do the best you can to shape his mentality as early as possible. I also believe in having a positive village around him.
For example: I started teaching him how to program computers and teaching him about how computer hardware/networking works. I believe that if you have a positive male role model ( me, my brother , my father ) around a kid , 50% - 70% of your job is done. Also having him listen to the same type of music that I do, will have it ingrained in him from early on ( 80's music, techno, Movie soundtracks ( Hans zimmer for example ). I've seen parents play three six mafia in front of their kids
and I know it has an affect on them because when I listen to wtop or any news station, I think he's not listening while we are in the car because he'll be on his PS Vita. But out of nowhere he'll ask me a question related to something that was on the radio. I also think listening to educational stuff while he's in the car will help.For example, I think nobody explains physic topics better than Michio Kaku . I'll rip something like this off youtube and have him listen to it while we are in the car
You have to take advantage of a kids curiosity, people will be surprised at how much a kid will enjoy something like the youtube clip I posted.
