I don't personally care about the Oscars or any other award shows but people like Will Smith and Will Packard do care. Producing this year's Oscars will open even more doors for Will Packard just like winning an Oscar is an incredible achievement for Will Smith and puts him in a small an exclusive club of Black men that have won in the specific category he won in.
Whether Black society at large cares about these awards shows is somewhat but not completely irrelevant, a quiet and sad truth is that these awards are about white validation which is why the responses about making the BET awards "more prestigious" miss the point.
In 2015 a Black woman started the OscarsSoWhite hashtag because no non-white people were nominated. This started a larger conversation that ultimately led to more diverse nominations but at the core, it was Black people fighting for a seat at a white table.
