Basically, the end goal is to be financially independent so that you dont be a corporate puppet for the rest of your life. fukk sacrificing your best years of your life to be in a cubicle. These corporate positions, at least for many like-minded people, outlived its use since so much info out there to be financially independent today.

The last thing to do is to be stuck in corporate for 30-40 years, and be at the mercy of someone. Thats indentured servitude!

Corporate culture is conformity. You are naive if you think white people don't have to conform as well. Everyone has to. Some people, however, can conform a bit easier than others.

The problem is black people undervalue many important skills that would otherwise allow them to thrive in corporate environments. Skills like small talk. Small talk will take you farther than your own technical skills. It’s probably the most important skill to have.

If you are having problems in that regard, get this book.

I’m definitely for playing the corporate game. The long run is gaining the professional skills to be able to go off and do your own thing successfully when the time comes.

Bingo.

Or go Blue collar:boss:

But even then I have to somewhat play the game. If I go into a meeting a nice suit and a tight haircut/grooming goes a long way.

People take u more seriously

The key is to do that as least as possible. It is to GET OUT OF that fake ass environment.

I was taught to dress for the job that you want, not the job that you have.

They moved my office to the corner end of the building away from the rest of my department. I'm the only one in my department on a separate floor than everyone else with an office to myself. They're on the 12th floor, I'm on the 14th. Like an adult corporate version of the time-out corner except with an office and a salary. Moved my black ass out to the wasteland.

Don't know - I probably do have a problem with authority and conformity. I need no meaningless interruptions and need to fully concentrate. So I think they figure, just let her be and do her thing, give her own space to be antisocial in. They know that I have a reputation for doing good work, efficiency and managing my own time but I've been here long enough that they know the personality clashes. I don't do all that officey poly-ing shyt either. Just got a promotion this month that I wasn't expecting, i'm the only black female in this position though but where I work is diverse so it's not like there's this heavy overlying racial element here - I can say that. Definitely not the only "face" in the room. There are black males at my job in good positions - mostly in finance and accounting, IT Support. I know for a fact one is a c00n but the rest are regular every day type of dudes who worked their way up. They just do their job and go home. No funny shyt.

Not so much conformity, but I was always told that appearance means a lot and is impactful. Regardless of how you feel on the inside, never let your outside reflect that. Do the best with the resources that you have and I don't play when it comes to having work standards for myself and have a strong work ethic. I'm cordial with them, but I think they know I don't play all those corporate games and networking b.s., Reached the point where I don't have the energy for it. Let me do my training, take whatever courses to keep updated, attend the meetings and let me do my work - no small talk or banter. My job is mostly researching and analyzing data anyway- I don't need to be a people person or be in a positon to interact with people on the daily.

He made a lot of good points:ohhh:

A lot of brehs do shoot themselves in the foot over trivial issues (long hair, excessive facial hair, clothing etc)

But I cant be the only one who feels it’s exhausting and draining to be around cacs all day & have to play “their game”. Dont get me started on the happy hours, “networking” (aka pretending to like & talk about winter sports, golf and shyt like that), and “power lunches”.

On the other hand if u play their game long enough, u can be in a position to help and put on other black people in positions in power to fortify ur position.

What are ur thoughts on playing the game? Is it worth it?

That's a big IF. If they let you climb the ladder and get to that point. What's to say the won't let others climb over you and you stuck in that position?

I wouldn't play the corporate game, but if I did it would be more along the lines of making the boss money so he can see how valuable I am and laugh at all the ass kissers
