Everyone I came across: "good afternoon, how's your day going?" "Is it cool to pass through here?"
They gave greetings in return and said yeah, no problem.
Acknowledging people's existence and respecting their boundaries goes a long way
They live there, you don't.
I was taking pics and videos of the scenery and no one stepped to me or told me to stop.

At the same time I didn't get the sense of danger and impending doom I got when I went to Juarez (but that was in 2010 at the height of the Sinaloa/Juarez war)

I went last year, La Perla is literally right next to one of the biggest tourist attractions. I walked through a couple blocks. it's shady feeling but nothing that feels so dangerous you are instantly scared. Just mind your business and use common sense. Also it's no real reason to be there

the Mexican military was deployed all over town. Soldiers posted up at every corner with M-16s
Convoys were patrolling up and down the main roads
Life went on as usual. Kids were on the let out, people going about their business, hustlers hustling
I really went just on some I'm right here at the border, why not?

I was walking around dolo, taking pics here and there at the mercado, plaza Benito Juarez, things like that
I remember walking past this brothel and the whores were outside with the most bored look on their faces (no clientele)
Did not see a single American (cartel wars tend to kill tourism)

If I would've got hemmed up somehow it would've been game over for me

So after a few hours and eating some torta and elotes I bounced back to El Paso
I was the only American crossing back
