Probably a lot of pressure to maintain your lifestyle.

You want the good job, the house, the cars, wife and kids. Then you get it and relalize you got to maintain it the next 20 years. The grind don't stop.

But don’t these cats make like $160k a year working in these tech industries? If I was making that type of dough in my early 20s, fukk having a family, house and luxury cars. I’d still be single, in an apartment and mobbin a hooptie to work. Just stack and stack until I can retire in my 40s

I feel you.

Taxes taking a good amount of money. Depending on where you living. In the Bay an apartment for yourself is probably 3K minimum.

Then every year you are fighting for your stock options and bonuses.

i was following this story since it was reported and i'm glad the family got closure. the young man accomplished a lot and had a bright future ahead of him. very unfortunate this happened. RIP.

everything isn't what it seems in the tech industry. the politics, work pressure, lack of work/life balance and lack of support from co-workers and management can take a big mental and physical toll on you. that 160k is total compensation which means your base salary is probably 100k-120k and with high taxes it isn't that good when you take into account the high cost of living. your rent alone is gonna be around 2,500-3,000.

What a shame. It's so rare to see Ethiopians in that industry. It's normally a bunch of Nigerians and a few Kenyans.

I've only ever met one Ethiopian in tech. Admittedly, that particular Ethiopian lamented to me about how much he despised coding, so I don't know if he counts...

But Im still curious what Ethiopians specialize in in the US. While I admittedly don't live in their hotspots like DC , I rarely see them outside of their ethnic food establishments. Also , for some strange reason I noticed they run the Denver airport at night during a layover.
they in everything, but like most African diaspora - heavily weighted in medicine, law, and engineering. a ton in DC are involved in real estate too

probably imposter syndrome and then poor work/life balance, especially in tech. Coding a passion project is completely different from working in a FAANG company.
110% It can become overwhelming with stress, deadlines, thinking that you aren't good enough and you will be found out soon. It's crazy what it can drive you to. Then if home life isn't good and work life isn't good, it's a recipe for disaster. So sorry to hear about this lost and I hope more people take time for themselves and their own mental health.

not to mention the overall culture shock. breh was coming from the east coast. outside of Oakland you find very few black people on top of being the 1-2% of blacks in your company

GGB suicide jump is a horrible way to go out too

The impact is tremendous. The body goes from roughly 75 to 80 mph to nearly zero in a nanosecond. The physics of inertia being what they are, internal organs tend to keep going. The force of impact causes them to tear loose. Autopsy reports typically indicate that the jumpers have lacerated aortas, livers, spleens and hearts. Ribs are often broken, and the impact shoves them into the heart or lungs. Jumpers have broken sternums, clavicles, pelvises and necks. Skull fractures are common.

Which means you die one of two ways, or a combination of both. One, you hit the water and the impact kills you. Sometimes the jumper is knocked unconscious. Other times, the jumper survives for a time. The person can be seen flailing about in the water, trying to stay afloat, only to succumb to the extensive internal bleeding. Death can take seconds or minutes. Two, you drown. You hit the water going fast, and your body plunges in deep. Conscious or otherwise, you breathe in saltwater and asphyxiate.

One of Holmes' investigators, Darrell Harris, walks by at that moment and overhears. "Yup," he says. "Multiple blunt-force trauma."
In other words, you die the same way as someone hit by a car.

There is very little job security at Netflix

That’s probably the reason
There is little job security in tech in general. That’s why if you making big bucks, save. Avoid marriage, kids until you have enough stacked away.
