Film. Documentaries. ‘Generation Soweto’ Looks At South Africa Through the Eyes of It’s Millennials.
Generation-Soweto-Film.jpg

Created by veteran filmmaker Nisa Ahmad, Generation Soweto looks at how South African has developed by turning the lens on the country’s Millennials.

Generation Soweto is a Documentary Film about Millennials in South Africa. This Project was born during my recent travels to South Africa. It explores Youth Culture through the eyes of four 18-30 year olds in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, the suburbs of Sandton to the streets of Soweto. The film is a look at current political and social climate, 20 years after the ending of Apartheid in South Africa. We explore the job market, entrepreneurship, and the rising costs of living, technology in a developing country and what gentrification means to them.

While Generation Soweto explores South Africa within the context of the nation’s recent history, the film’s creators stress that the project is not a retrospective.

It’s a look at current political and social climate, 20 years after the ending of Apartheid in South Africa. We explore the job market, entrepreneurship, rising costs of living, technology in a developing country and what gentrification means to young South Africans. Today’s South African youth, face the first time in the history of the country where social equality seems almost within reach. Through the eyes of our cast we will also explore the way in which the current political climate is influencing their dreams and goals; Afrophobia, Xenophobia, the Soweto Protests against the Power Company, and other aspects of daily life in South Africa.

The project is currently in the process of raising funds for production costs. Support it HERE and watch a trailer for Generation Soweto below.

#strolling goes to The Netherlands. Ramona Talks Black Dutch Identity, Colonialism, Cultural Pride, Veganism and More.

Filmmaker Cecile Emeke’s breakout diaspora documentary series #strolling has made some series waves with profiles of black women and men talking about race and identity in London as well as in Paris. Over time Emeke has stated that she’ll be taking the series to other countries as well, and it looks like she’s finally arrived.

For the first episode of wandelen, “strolling” in Dutch, we meet Ramona, who speaks about feeling like a Dutch woman, black Dutch identity, being Vegan, and colonialism.

A major standout part of this, for me, as an American, is seeing Ramona, similar to past #strolling subjects in France and the UK, talk how race relations in her country either touches on U.S. history, centers it, or uses it as a foil.

“The whole framework of the Dutch media, that like, the real racism in the U.S.,” she says.

the-Retrieval.jpg

1864: as war ravages the nation, on the outskirts of the Civil War business as usual continues for slave-owners and traders. The Retrieval follows Will, a fatherless 13 year-old boy, who survives by working with a white bounty hunter gang who sends him to earn the trust of runaway slaves in order to lure them back to the South. On a dangerous mission into the free North to find Nate, a fugitive freedman, things go wrong and Will and Nate find themselves on the run. As the bond between them unexpectedly grows, Will becomes consumed by conflicting emotions as he faces a gut-wrenching final decision.Thrilling, but grounded in historical research, The Retrieval serves as an insight into the grey period between slavery and freedom and the horrific moral dilemma that comes with being forced to betray your fellow man.

The Retrieval is streaming on Netflix. Worth a watch.

RAISING DION (COMIC BOOK)

written by Dennis Liu, illustrated by Jason Piperberg
  • Imagine Superman, but from Martha Kent's point of view. Or imagine Spiderman, but from Aunt May's point of view. This is a superhero story, but from the parent's point of view. But unlike her son, she doesn't have any powers.
  • PREMISE: Nicole, raises her 7 year old son, Dion, who has superpowers. Life was hard enough keeping up with the bills, let alone trying to keep track of her son’s invisibility, plasma powers, and telekinesis. In order to study his progress, Nicole films her son 24/7 with the help of her friend, Pat, who is an aspiring filmmaker. But when Nicole starts to notice mysterious men tailing her, and with Dion’s developing abilities constantly changing and becoming more powerful and possibly evil, she must find the courage deep within herself that she can raise Dion on her own.
You can download the first issue of the comic below for FREE. You can also purchase a physical copy from the below LINK.

All funds made from physical sales will be used towards the next issue.

So why do we have paramedics/EMTs? We owe that to Black excellence.
tumblr_inline_nkphjpqYRk1rfsw6h.jpg

In the 1960s, there were no ambulances. Medical emergencies were handled by police, who had no medical training or equipment. But police didn’t want to go to Pittsburgh’s mostly black Hill District. Enter Freedom House.

Freedom House was founded by Dr Peter Safar (the father of CPR) and Phil Hallen, and recruited unemployed black men, training them to provide emergency medical treatment and drive ambulances. Otherwise unemployable men–high school dropouts, alcoholics, drug users, were given a chance to earn a living while providing a valuable service.

Soon, the city of Pittsburgh took over the service, and the Freedom House emergency medical model was applied nationwide.

Saw this during the summer. Full of stereotypes and if I recall, written by an Asian dude. Couldn't judge till I read though, cause otherwise it looks interesting.
