It's not about how they look. Don't let the west and modern history skew your understanding of ancient history. To know their languages is to understand the people. They speak different languages bc they've been separated that long.
If you're more familiar with Europe due to a western education, look at alsace-lorraine, a ppl who speak a mix of German and French bc they exist on the border of the two. That's
evidence that they've intermixed.
Idk too much about
contemporary Ethiopia, but if ppl live right next to each other and speak different dialects, that's
historical proof that they don't fw each other.
Thats true but to be willing to potentially perish over something that cant be that serious if it happened thousands of years ago? It's mostly due to the fact that africans are nomadic people and roamed the continent in small cliques. Thats why africa has so many languages and cultures. They got bigger fish to fry is all I'm saying.
Actually Amharic and Tigrinya are very much alike. They both, along with guraginya derive from ge'ez and are why these people are considered part of the Semitic language group, (southern Arabic dialect I believe but don't quote me). They have the same norms, follow the same God, celebrate the same holidays etc.
meanwhike, oromos et al are from Cushytic speaking tribes.
Hamer and Omo were given through negotiation and demarcation with Britain to establish a border with Sudan.
Same with Ogaden and the east with somali.
The way i look at Ethiopia is....when the scramble for africa went down, the remaining free fiefdoms and kingdoms combined either through influence, pressure, or force (the end of the zemene mesafint era) and the land comprised of remaining non-western-colonized peoples formed the basis for what is modern day Ethiopia.
There are over 80 recognized nations and nationalities. Some are extremely alike. Some are night and day. But even the language, names, mannerisms and cultural norms have intertwined during that time with predominantly the tribe in power having the most influence (think Solomonic dynasty narrative being used to portray the whole ET story).
it's not a black and white thing. It was done out of necessity to secure lands, borders, and resources away from colonizing westerners but now we have to deal with what actually happens when you bring all these different levels of education, wealth, and culture together. Similar to America's melting pot experiment without any of the resources or knowledge lol.
Pray for us. We one of the only ones fighting back colonialism with this dam issue (hi USA and Egypt) and now it seems internal conflict has taken our eye off the ball (same ol playbook move).
