Yes, it happens, folks who aren’t close to other black folks. It’s overall different from someone selectively using Blackness as a tool when it benefits them - whether for credibility, opportunities, or acceptance in certain spaces.

Being Black isn’t an act, but how you engage with that identity says a lot. If someone only taps into Blackness when it serves them but otherwise disregards the culture and community, it’s fair to question their INTENTIONS.

Its not so much about penalizing anyone for their upbringing. If someone grew up disconnected from Black culture because of their parents, that’s just their reality. But as an adult, they have a choice in how they engage with their identity. The issue isn’t about being ‘Black enough’—it’s about whether someone only embraces Blackness when it benefits them while otherwise staying distant. If they’re genuinely trying to connect, cool. But if it’s just selective engagement (half in/half out) for credibility, that’s when it becomes questionable
