It doesn't matter. I doubt these devs are going bankrupt and are losing millions of dollars because a few thousand people who probably wouldn't have bought the game pirated it. Why do people defend these devs all the time?? People are going to pirate games no matter what. I pirated Crysis 3 and I could've bought it but I didn't. I don't care I never planned on buying it. What difference does it make if I downloaded it from online or I simply dl'd off of a friend's account via PSN account sharing?? I'm not beat, these devs ain't going broke because some people pirated their games. You sound like you just are putting morals into the argument when that's not what I was talking about.

let's take it a step further what difference does it make to the developer if you bought it from Gamestop or downloaded it? either way they don't see a dime off you.

if these people wanna apply logic to condemn downloading of games then take it the whole way and preach against used game sales and loaning games to friends as well.

if the developer doesn't get paid what difference does it make if you played an authorized copy or an unauthorized one? the end result is the developer didn't get compensated both ways.

I think some people's argument is that they just morally see downloading games without paying for it is wrong because you didn't support the developer. Whereas merely trying it out second hand isn't the same because it's still that single, paid for copy floating around.

I just simply was stating that infringment of copyright isn't theft in the strictest sense. It's important to make the distinction because this is very important in a legal situation but we aren't speaking legally right now anyway.

Again I was just speaking in the legal strict sense.
What needs to be done is when devs speak out on this issue, they need to make the distinction so it can confuse less people.

so basically an unauthorized copy is wrong because the developer doesn't get compensated but the transfer of an authorized copy in which the developer doesn't get compensated is ok? sure the first person compensated the developer but from that point on no compensation.

from the standpoint of the developer they didn't get compensated either way so which really hurts them more?

do these guys who cry about copyright infringement mail the developers checks every time they purchase a used game or borrow one from a friend?

Whether or not someone has a problem with people downloading their games online is another discussion that in the grand scheme of things is up to the person. There is no right or wrong in this matter, it's all a matter of perspective. I've YET to see someone prove their side of this discussion because it all boils down to your own personal feelings. I can tell we won't agree so I might as well end my argument here.
You guys don't see the big picture and YES it has affected how games are being created these days. Don't you see how few risks these companies are taking these days? Its the same old recycled franchises and now HD remakes of classics to get people to buy. A new franchise that takes risks is extremely difficult to pull off these days because publishers are worried that they won't see a return because of how expensive it is. So yeah, thousands downloaded and pirated the game. What if they didn't have that option? Let's say 5,000 of them would be tempted to buy the game because they could not acquire it by other means....that's anywhere from 200K-300K just on that first thousand. Subsequent downloaders would probably bite at lower price points to gain even more money in the long run. Steam has proven this already, you and @winb83 are wrong

Thats because of development costs, not piracy  This game im hearing cost 100 million to make. THere are hollywood films that dont get that kinda budget. Seems like a big risk.

They'll make it back, but these companies and stockholders don't simply want to break even or clear $100 million, with the budget this game had they're probably expecting 7-8 million copies sold. I don't see that happening, but who knows.
I think it might get close across all platforms. DD really needs to take off on the console side of things tho, that distribution is a HUGE part of their budget.
