It's been nearly 30 years since Keanu Reeves (Ted) and Alex Winter (Bill) started their insane, teenage, time-traveling antics in 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and 1991's Bill & Ted's Bogus Adventure.
But Reeves, 53, and Winter, 52, say they are closer than ever to making a third film with a script titled Bill & Ted Face the Music from original screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon.
The filmmakers went back in time with Entertainment Weekly for its Untold Stories issue, discussing their hopes for the new film after nearly a decade of development delays.
Face the Music's story would spring from the end of Excellent Adventure, when futuristic mentor Rufus (George Carlin) told the duo that they would write music that would turn the world into a utopia. This has not happened yet.
“You’re told you’re gonna save the world,” Matheson said. “And now you’re 50 and you haven’t done it. Now they’re married, and it affects their marriages, and it affects their relationships with their kids, and it affects their everything.”
“Everybody’s a little older now,” said Reeves. “A little afraid.”
“There’s certain comparisons,” said Winter. “A rock band that never goes to the place it thought it was going to get to. Having that moment in their life of going: ‘Do we try to get there, or give up the dream?' ”
Bill Sadler will return as Death along with "a few delicious cameos by people to be named another time," said Solomon.
With producers such as Steven Soderbergh attached, the filmmakers are hoping to meet with financiers for the project and have final, bodacious news by next month.
“I love the characters so much," said Reeves, noting the original film's underlying message. “You can’t go wrong with: ‘Be excellent to each other.’ And: ‘Party on!’ I mean, it might actually be the beginning, one of the first examples of contemporary modern apocalyptic art.”
'Bill & Ted 3' could finally happen for Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter with 'Face the Music'
