It's a lot more complex than pre-historic monkeys simply "turning into white men" though
Evolution is a very long process. You can't simplify it by talking like it took a couple of hundred years, not necessarily saying you did. But that's sort of the mindset a lot of people have when thinking about it.

It's not pure speculation though. It's based on evidence and scientific research. It's as close as it gets to understanding where we came from.
Most people don't believe the whole evolution thing because they haven't read enough about it and/or because it doesn't collaborate with what they've been taught their entire life.
People understand micro evolution, or the unfoldmeant of a species vs. science projecting a macro style evolution in which there are not only biological leaps in species but from plant to insect to animal to man.
A bird was not chased by animals on land for such a long time that it evolved wings to flee predators, a bird has and always will be a bird.
Everything was already created/here on earth the moment humans came to being.
