"Bill Gates has written an article in Wired outlining his strategy to improve people's lives through philanthropy and investment in technology and the sciences. He says, 'We want to give our wealth back to society in a way that has the most impact, and so we look for opportunities to invest for the largest returns. That means tackling the world's biggest problems and funding the most likely solutions. That's an even greater challenge than it sounds. I don't have a magic formula for prioritizing the world's problems. You could make a good case for poverty, disease, hunger, war, poor education, bad governance, political instability, weak trade, or mistreatment of women. ...I am a devout fan of capitalism. It is the best system ever devised for making self-interest serve the wider interest. This system is responsible for many of the great advances that have improved the lives of billions—from airplanes to air-conditioning to computers. But capitalism alone can't address the needs of the very poor. This means market-driven innovation can actually widen the gap between rich and poor. ... We take a double-pronged approach: (1) Narrow the gap so that advances for the rich world reach the poor world faster, and (2) turn more of the world's IQ toward devising solutions to problems that only people in the poor world face.'"

:whoo:Rich people cant catch any kind of a break around here, even when they are trying to give back...:wow:

It's because most of the super-rich didn't earn most of their wealth. Gates is a perfect example. He used everything but actual innovation- family connections/nepotism, insider info, ripping off ideas from smaller companies and superior products- to get rich. He was consistently following, rather than leading, tech innovation, and the more the company grew, the more he was able to exploit those processes. The monopoly of Microsoft was a disgrace no matter how you slice it.

This is a perfect example of Capitalism rewarding rent-seeking behavior instead of actual innovation, btw.

Bill Gates is being modest and politically correct...His actions in the past few years indicate that, he doesn't believe in true capitalism...Exploitation and Extortion...

True Capitalism simply doesn't work for mammals...

Like I have stated in a different thread, humans are the only social mammals were the majority of the members are living in poverty, even though there is an abundance of resources...

It makes no sense...

:comeon: Im going to ignore the ridiculous monopoly claim. That whole case was nonsense.

But underlining your response is the concept of wealth as a reward for merit...:patrice: Interesting. so there is a point where liberals begin to believe people should be paid what they are worth?
... and third parties should have to approve of how they made their money? :ohhh:

ideological differences aside, there will be instances of windfall gains and losses in any system(not just capitalism). These are seen as an acceptable cost, given the benefits...
pointing them out, doesnt negate the benefits or hurt capitalism.
We lead the world in innovation because of capitalism, not in spite of it.

But are we mad at Ford for putting the idea of a carriage and an engine together to make the car?

There is rarely ever pure innovation. Without Gates, our computer experience would be no where near it is.

Plus, this guy gives / has given tons of his money away for good causes. You can hate many, but Bill Gates is not one. Hate Jobs if anyone.

This might be true, but the results of our overwhelmingly capitalist society(prior to recently) speaks for itself.

And on what are you basing this on...? The world is a better place because of revolutionary thinking in
(1) Healthcare, especially the idea of how society is responsible to ensure that all members are healthy, and not just blaming the sick for being "lazy and ignorant" (like Capitalism teaches us to do)...

(2) The various socialist and humanist movements that pushed for equal rights for very member of society...Issues that True Capitalists never cared for, and still do not care for...

To me these were key changes that made life on Earth a little better for more people...

If it was for True Capitalism, black people would still be slaves...

Alright wise guy. Explain why.
DOS WASN'T THE OPTIMAL SOFTWARE, WINDOWS ISN'T THE OPTIMAL SOFTWARE, AND WHATEVER THEY PUT OUT NEXT PROBABLY WON'T BE THE BEST EITHER, BROTHER! THEN AGAIN, WITHOUT MICROSOFT, IT'S POSSIBLE THAT OTHER IDIOTS LIKE COMMODORE COULD HAVE RUINED THINGS EVEN WORSE, DUDE!
