SANTA MARIA, Calif., June 16 (UPI) -- Michael Jackson may owe his acquittal on molestation charges to private investigator Scott Ross, whose sole job was to discredit the accuser's mother.
Ross worked with defense attorney Thomas Mesereau in developing damaging information about the wife of actor Robert Blake, who was acquitted on murder charges.
Ross said Meserau gave him a clear goal in the Jackson case.
"He said, 'You need to do to the accuser's mother what you did to Bonnie Lee Bakley,'" Ross told "Celebrity Justice."
Once he dug into the mother's history, Ross said he found "lying, cheating and stealing seemed to be a way of life for her."
"One thing just leads to another ... sometimes it leads to gold," Ross told the Los Angeles Times.
Ross said he has worked on hundreds of cases and Jackson is one of just three people who have thanked him.
"He doesn't sound like freak to me. He sounds like a decent human being," Ross said.
