I got no hate for Beyonce as I've prob said before. She has some (not much) music I like, she's an icon, she's the queen of pop etc etc. The thing I always wonder about is how she did a soft reboot of her career. In 2011 she dropped an album that was popular, but wasn't "biggest thing in the world" popular. That album, 4, had Girls (Who Run The World) on it but wasn't some massive smash album. It sold 300k first week. For comparison, Lady Gaga did 1mil first week that same year. Adele did 350k first week that same year, on an album that ultimately went on to sell 10 million records.

Then two years later she dropped the self titled album and completely shifted from "popular but waning popularity" figure to legit queen of everything. That album did 617k first week with multiple smash hits. Few years later Lemonade did 480k and again set everything on fire.

Was it just a matter of better songwriting and getting the right records at the right time? Perhaps. Because I remember in 2010/2011 ppl were kinda clowning her.

Lady Gaga sold her album for 99 cents. She is the reason billboard changed the rules to state that an album must cost 3-5 bucks or something at least. I also think that album following 4 sold 600k+ in only 3 days.

I believe that it was that she became a lot more “inclusive” cause the album wasn’t as girly, it had influences of contemporary hiphop, soul, RnB, pop and on. It was highly reviewed and overall critically acclaimed unlike albums from most pop stars. Also I think promotion was better and that Girls was a sleeper hit. While still played at parties like it was released yesterday, it didn’t make mad noise when it dropped, specially not outside the clubs.

Given how big she was at the time, her selling that album for that cheap was definitely going to inflate her sales. Still, that album isn't exactly her most popular. Look at what it did total. Adele is an anomaly.

Beyonce's career needed that reboot because she didn't have any edge. So she came back with something that was completely different from what she'd been doing. She came back with a darker sound with content that was far more personal than anything she'd done before. Then, she had the element of surprise by dropping the album in mid December without warning.
