You’ll find more discourse saying how HER is forced and doesn’t deserve the wins and nominations she has (lost AOTY twice this decade). Lizzo lost (AOTY twice this decade) and the focus was wholly beyonce despite Lizzo having commercial success and ticking some of the “artsy” boxes by both being a writer and flautist. Mary J Blige was finally nominated after 2+ decades and there should have been tons of think pieces about her being deserving of this nod for what’s the 411 and/or my life - she quite literally created a sub genre. If people were serious about this being a “black (woman) thing” their stories, very recent examples, wouldnt fall by the wayside. The headline and thesis is always why beyonce deserves it.

The conversation only comes back to Beyonce because she's the only one of them that's been nominated four times and not won. Now, one could argue that Mary has multiple albums that weren't even nominated. Even moreso, there's a lot of Black women and Black artists in general that were never nominated for that award. With Beyonce, its moreso how it looks "you're good enough to be nominated, but not good enough to win this award. Be grateful you were nominated, because we were generous enough to award you more trophies than anyone". That sens the message to other Black women that if an artist as big as Beyonce can't win, they don't have a fighting chance.
