theres one thing if you have no one on your level, but JBL was pure garbage getting great opponents.

Has anyone explained how he got that main event push?

Lesnar leaving left a void in the top heel spot so they randomly gave it to JBL so he could transition the title to Cena eventually.

Apparently, Vince had wanted to push him for years, and just had the best chance to do so then. Right place, right time, Eddie was willing to put him over.

Didn't keep it from sucking, but whatever.
