I'd be more excited if this was Gilligawds show

It is. He'll be in the writer's room the entire first season and he's directing the first episode. After the first season depending on how it goes he might stay, or he might go do something else and leave the show to Peter Gould.

Gilligan won't be as hands on though. he's letting Gould take the reins. I have a feeling in the next 3 months we'll be hearing an announcement about Gilligan's new show, and it most likely will be on HBO or Netflix. Which is good, so he can push the boundaries with no restraints or censorship.

In this interview he said he'll be in the writer's room full time for the first season at the very least. Peter Gould won't take over until the 2nd season, if there even is a 2nd season.

Yeah but this show isn't his metaphorical, "baby". The association to breaking bad means high expectations from me (and I think you feel the same) and I just have huge doubts that expectation can be met.

I know he says he'll be in the writer's room. You know how many exec producers who are in the writer's room, who don't exactly lead the series? Lots. He's gonna let Gould do his thing and be supportive. This isn't his baby. He's got something cooking of his own. He gonna let his boy Gould shine.

It'll be interesting to see how they use Mike in a show thats 75% comedic. There ain't much funny about that dude aside from his complete disdain for stupidity.

He has huge doubts too. :manny:

If the bar is "will this show be as good as BB?" then yeah we're going to be disappointed. That's like asking "is Treme as good as The Wire?".

If the bar is "will this show be good/great?", I think it will be.

Between guest directing other shows and "Better Call Saul" I doubt we'll get a new show from Gilligan for at least a year or two. And whatever he does I doubt it'll be "the next BB". Which is fine, the guy has been writing classic TV for close to 20 years.

@jay211 specifically:

Normally I would agree with what you're saying about exec prods, but if they do this like "BB" then every writer will be an executive producer/producer. And every writer will sit around, 8-10 hours a day plotting out the season, piece by piece:

After that they hand off individual episodes to 1-2 writers to script. I guess he can bounce whenever he wants to but there wasn't an executive producer/producer involved with "BB" that wasn't around almost 24/7. Even Michelle MacLaren who was rarely in the writer's room directed the most episodes out of anyone.
