Yeah but Doug E Fresh and Missy Elliot aren't comparable.

They don't have to be. That isn't the point I was making. Hip Hop is more than being a dope MC. Being a dope MC doesn't make one more Hip Hop.

Beyond the surface level, Doug E. Fresh and Missy Elliott are entertainers. They are both figures within Hip Hop who brought classic music to the table. Both focused more on the fun factor than on lyrical prowess.

I want to vote Nas, but leaning toward Jay Z because he had the entire year up until "Ether". For me, Nas's reign started with the "Stillmatic Freestyle". The last three or four months of 2001, Nas was on a roll. It set the stage for the year he had in 2002. That's a year that I'd say was Nas's easily. His only competition that year was Eminem and Nas still gets the edge. Album wise, only Scarface was seeing Nas.
