I voted Snoop but I don't know if he was the best overall emcee at the time but he DEFINATELY was the hottest and most popular of the time and with dropping a classic in the same year, its hard to not give him the nod.

You got a point here. Snoop is running away with 93, but if Doggystyle had dropped in January of 94, is there any doubt he finishes third behind Nas and Big?

I know we don't count soundtracks but you'd have to consider Murder was the Case for sure. 94 + Doggystyle he'd be my pick

nah son. nah Snoop not gonna run away with this. Listen, I love Snoop and by all means he had a great 93. But for this year, WE MUST HAVE CO MVPS. Snoop Dogg/Wu tang clan. Yes the wu is a group. yes it's 7 to 1. But let's 36 chambers started it all off. Everyone had solo success. Touring, Merchandise. That same impact snoop had on the west Wu had the same impact on the east. Actually if you think about it, it was worldwide impact for both. NO freaking way you can say Snoop dominated 93 and not mention the Wu. My vote is for Co mvps- Snoop and Wu tang

It'd definitely be a competitive thread, much more than this one.

When I looked at Complex's list, it wasn't really representative of the best rapper every year, just the most popular at the time. Snoop in 93 fits the rare case where he was arguably the most popular, most skilled and had the biggest year from a career perspective, but in 94, he might not qualify in any of those 3 categories. I always said in the 90s the bar got raised significantly. Snoop wasn't the ringing of a new era, he was the last breed of the older era, as he's much more Slick Rick than he is Nas. The waves of emcees that came out in the mid 90s changed our standards.

Not to diss Wu at all, but Doggystyle sold multiple times what Enter the 36 Chambers did, and Snoop was ushering in the Death Row era in Hiphop. Wu definitely deserves a mention, but in 93, nobody could compete with Snoop.
