The fact that Sega done dropped the ball so many times with Sonic over the past 20’ish years yet the IP can still be a billion dollar movie franchise in 2025… just speaks to the inherent gold mine the character was.

For varied reasons he just couldn’t keep pace or hit the same highs as Mario and Link in the gaming industry, but he was arguably if not definitely perceived as the cooler character among the youth.

If sonic were a musician he’d have like 5 million ig followers and do 15k fw record sales

Most of Mario's design was actually the result of the graphical limitations of the time. They gave him a mustache so players could distinguish his facial features more easily, and the overalls were included so the player could clearly see his arms moving while he was running around.
Miyamoto: ...And so when we first drew the character in Donkey Kong, he was drawn using pixel dots in a 16x16 grid. So it was a very small space in which to draw the character, and it was a very small character on the screen. And so in order to emphasize the unique characteristics of the character, we made the big nose and the mustache and the overalls to make it easy to understand what the character was doing on the screen.

Sometimes limitations really do breed creativity :jbhmm:

EDIT: They also gave Mario and Luigi hats because it was hard to animate hair back in 1981. :jbhmm:

Never bringing back the cape is a CRITICAL Nintendo error

Youre confusing "best" with "greatest" Sonic inst the best in terms how good he looks, but hes one of the greatest because his look is just so recognizable. The best could be anybody though. Scorpion, Sub Zero, Chu Li, Kratos, Dante, etc.
