What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Aug. 25-27)

This weekend sees the return of National Cinema Day on Sunday. It fell on a Saturday last year where tickets were $3. They'll be $4 this year. fukkin inflation. Is nothing sacred? :damn: That $4 per ticket is good for every showtime and, more importantly, every format. So, if you wanna watch Gran Turismo (:skip:) at Cinemark in XD or Blue Beetle in IMAX, and save over $10, then catch them on Sunday.

New Movies

We got Gran Turismo playing in 3,856 theaters. It's:

Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs -a struggling, working- class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec - who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.

For those of you who don't know, this is based on on Sony's PlayStation Gran Turismo racing videogame series. I've never been a fan. My history with Gran Turismo is limited to the PS2 demo disc. :skip:

It's a new movie, the second widest release, and it may not even finish number one. You know there's a couple of those Microsoft Momo's just waiting to pounce if that happens. :mjlol:

Liam Neeson is back with Retribution, a movie whose trailer I just saw for the first time an hour ago. :wow: What's it about?

A bank executive receives a bomb threat while driving his children to school that his car will explode if they stop and get out.

Sounds like Liam is on his Speed shyt. :banderas: I could swore he just did a transportation-based movie.
*checks IMDb*
shyt. There it is. The Commuter. He was an insurance salesman who also happened to be an ex-cop, who got caught up in some shyt on a train. :wow:

Helen Mirren plays a jew broad with a prosthetic nose in Golda. They calling in "Jew face." :dead: It's a biopic that:

focuses on the intensely dramatic and high-stakes responsibilities and decisions that Golda Meir, also known as the Iron Lady of Israel' faced during the Yom Kippur War.

The Hill, another movie where I just saw the trailer for the first time, will play 1,570 theaters. It's another "remarkable true-life story of Rickey Hill's improbable journey to play Major League Baseball." Apparently this dude had a debilitating spinal disease and still made the show. It's alsi another sports movie with Dennis Quaid. He played dikk Vermeil in 2021's American Underdog.:wow:

Jurassic Park is back for it's 30th anniversary in 3D. I'm pretty sure I caught it 10 years ago for the 20 year anniversary. This is an ideal movie to catch on Sunday for $4. It made $45.3M in the 2013 re-release. :leon:

Holdovers

Barbie may take back #1 should Blue Beetle get smashed. It already took the #1 spot from Mario to become the highest grossing movie of the year with $575.4M. The Super Mario Bros. Movie will actually be back in 1,451 theaters. Can't let Barbie run up the score on National Cinema Day weekend.

Blue Beetle is the widest release, playing at 3,871 theaters. It fell off by 66.5% on Monday. :wow: Maybe those $4 tickets will save it. It's sitting on $32.1M.

Mission: Impossible did the smart thing and added 72 theaters, which it shoulda did last weekend.

The Little Mermaid jumps up to 1,600 theaters with a Sing-Along version. It's tryna cross $300M. It's at $297.2M.

Sony Stans Too Strong For Y'all; 'Gran Turismo' Races to #1 in Photo Finish: Weekend Box Office Results (Aug. 25-27)

It's National Cinema Day (NCD) so get out to the theater and catch a $4 flick. Those discounted tickets helped power PlayStation's Gran Turismo to first place with $17.3M, to knock Barbie off her perch for the first time in her run. NCD boosted Gran Turismo's ticket sales to the tune of $4.45M, for a 6% jump over Saturday. Without that boost, it wouldn't be sitting in pole position.

Did Gran Turismo fiddle with the preview numbers a little bit? Yeah,

goodfellas-de-niro.gif

It did $1.4M in Thursday previews, which are always included in Friday totals. It had special sneak peaks for the last couple of weekends, which were included in the preview totals, and added to the $8.65M opening Friday.

That makes PlayStation Studios 2 for its last 2 with Gran Turismo joining Uncharted with #1 openings. Of course, Uncharted had Tom Holland, which helped it take home $44M when it opened last August. Gran Turismo only had Chief Hopper from Stranger Things and aging Will Turner. But hey, first place is first place, baby. And this was well-received with an A CinemaScore. Add in The Last of Us on HBO and Twisted Metal on Peacock, and Sony is running this adaptation shyt. :banderas:

smirking-jack-salter.gif

Barbie was plastic c*nt hair away from taking first place. :skip:As such, with $17.1M, it was knocked outta first place (we'll see on Monday) for the first time in its 6 week run. Barbie shined today, with $7.75M, up 23.1% over last Sunday. That's the power of National Cinema Day. With $594.8M, Barbie is $20.3M ahead of Mario's $574.5M total for 2023's top earner.

fabulous-barbie.gif

Blue Beetle took 3rd place with $12.7M. That was only down 49% from last week which would seem like a great hold on the surface but it's a misnomer. Its $2.6M Friday was down 73.6% over last week. NCD helped it hold stronger with $6M in ticket sales, down only 7.8% over last Sunday. Its $46.3M after 2 weeks is juuuuuust ahead of Shazam! Fury of the God's $45.9M. That's tremendous company to keep. :wow:

blue-beetle-xolo-mariduena.gif

Oppenheimer has topped $300M with a $9M sixth weekend. Its $3.5M NCD was up 3.2% over last Sunday. It's his third film to pass the $300 million domestic mark, joining The Dark Knight ($533.7M) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448.1M). It passed Inception's $292.5M. But it's $777.1M still trails Inception's $825.7M global total.

christopher-nolan-listening.gif

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem rounded out the top five with $6.1M. This was the only movie in the top five, aside from Blue Beetle, to not receive a boost on NCD, as it's $2.1M Sunday was down 17.3% over last week. Its $98.1M running total is just shy of $100M. That makes it the 3rd highest grossing film in the Turtles franchise.

teenage-mutant.gif

Notables

Liam Neeson's Retribution opened with $3.3M. That's just ahead of the $3.1M Neeson's Memory opened with last year.

Talk To Me
fell out of the top 10 but finished with $2M. It's made $41M.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One also fell out of the top 10 with $2M. Still, that was only down 24.3% from last week. With $551.9M worldwide, it passes M:I2's $549.5M to become the franchise's 4th highest grossing film.

The 30th Anniversary 3D release of Jurassic Park made $1.7M. Last year's Jaws re-release opened with $2.6M and made $5.1M in 3 weeks. Spielberg's E.T. had a 40 year anniversary re-release last year, which opened with $1M. So, Jurassic Park was right in between those 2 classics.

Bottoms opened with $516K from 10 theaters. Great number. I know @PAWG Life is happy but I can't stand Ayo Edebiri. :hubie:
:mjpls:

The Little Mermaid made $510K and The Super Mario Bros. Movie finished with $280K.

What's at the Movies this Labor Day Weekend? (Sep. 1-4)

Labor Day weekend is fast approaching and that means the return of Denzel as Robert McCall in The Equalizer 3. This time, he's taking out the greaseballs and the goombas in Sicily. :banderas: And the Sicilian setting is a place where "he belongs." :mjpls: His wife has long been dead. Can he get him a Sicilian PAWG? I know that's what the homie @PAWG Life is gon be watching for.

The Equalizer movies have a special place for me because Denzel is my favorite actor and they filmed the first one in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The Home Mart where Denzel works, was filmed in the Lowe's in Haverhill, which is 5 minutes from my mother's house. That Lowe's no longer exists. It's a giant Amazon Hub now. :dead:

The Equalizer has been a very consistent franchise. All 3 movies are directed by Antoine Fuqua, who has stepped up to fill the void of Denzel's top collaborator after Tony Scott passed. This is their 4th movie since then. The box office returns have been equally as consistent. shyt, even Denzel's hair has been consistent. He's alternated between the baldie and the light Caesar with the waves.

The Equalizer opened with $34.1 million and 2014 in route to $101.5 million. The Equalizer 2 bested it with a $36 million opening in 2018, on its way to a $102 million domestic finish. The threequel should be good for $36M+ over the holiday weekend.

The Holdovers

With $597.5M, Barbie will get to $600M on Friday.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has crossed the $100M mark with $101.1M.

Elemental adds nearly 2,000 venues and will play at 2,160 theaters. Right after The Super Mario Bros. Movie loses 1,300 after National Cinema Day. :skip:

I read an article saying that IMAX would consider putting Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning back in IMAX theaters, which I thought should've been done. But it's down to 965 theaters. Makes sense with The Equalizer 3, another old man action movie, dropping this weekend.

@PAWG Life 's Bottoms expands to 715 theaters.

Denzel is Without Equal; Equalizer #3 is #1: Weekend Box Office Results (Sep. 1-3)

Robert McCall is back and he is number one at the box office. :wow: The Equaliz3r made $34.5M over the 3 day weekend. That's good for the second best opening in the franchise, beating The Equalizer's $34.1M in 2014. It will make $42M over the Labor Day holiday. Its 3 and 4 day totals are good for the second highest Labor Day opening ever behind Shang-Chi's $75.3M and $94.6M.

giphy.gif

It's Denzel's 5th best opening weekend, behind American Gangster ($43.5M) Safe House ($40.1M) The Equalizer 2 ($36M) and The Magnificent 7 ($34.7M). Interestingly, Denzel-Antoine Fuqua collabs account for 4 of Denzel's best openings. The Magnificent 7 was directed by Fuqua and The Equalizer is Denzel's 6th best opening.

This should have good legs and make $100M+ like the other two entries in the series. It locked in an A CinemaScore just like The Equalizer 2. The Equalizer only got an A- score. That was the best one. Easily. I've yet to see the third. Gotta watch it with my pops. He's a big fan of the series. It's a family affair. Now we gotta get John David to play the young Bobby McCall in the prequel series.

hugging-a-kid-robert-mccall.gif

Barbie is still holding down the second spot with $10.6M. That makes the domestic running total $609.5M. :whew: With $1.38B, it's 2023's highest grossing movie at the worldwide box office. It beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $1.35B in only 7 weeks and it's got millions more to bank.

dancing-barbie.gif

For the second weekend in a row Blue Beetle held down the third spot. This time with $7.2 million. With a $56.5 million running total, it is just over $1 million away from surpassing Shazam! Fury of the God's $57.6 million. :skip:

blue-beetle-dance.gif

Gran Turismo tumbled by 62.4% all the way down to fourth place, adding only $6.5 million to its $28.6M running total. But another $2M on Labor Day will get it to $30.6M. It's just under a mill away from passing Chappie's $31.5M total, to become Neil Blomkamp's 3rd highest grossing movie. I don't know if the Sony stans are in #shambles or not with this one. :mjlol:

smiling-danny-moore.gif

Oppenheimer rounds out the top 5 with a fitting $5.5 million. 5's are wild. :wow: It will make $7.2M over the holiday and bump its running total to $310.2 million. With $852.9 million worldwide, it passes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's $845.5M to become the third highest grossing movie of the year. How's that for return on investment for Universal? :ehh:

oppenheimer-shush.gif

Notables

Talk To Me
has made $44.5 million which passes the $44.2 million made by The Boogeyman to become the fifth highest grossing horror movie of the year.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One made $1.2M and is up to a $170.1M domestic running total and $560.1M worldwide. It's closing in on The Little Mermaid's $569.2M.

Elemental made $1.1M from 2,160 theaters. It's got $152.9M domestic and $478.7M worldwide totals. Looks like The right call was made putting in back in that many theaters this weekend.

The 30th anniversary of Jurassic Park made $389K in its second week for a $2.7M total. That best's E.T.'s $2M from last year.

What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Sep. 8-10)

First Sony dropped The Equalizer 3. This week, WB is back with another sequel: The Nun II. If you didn't know, it's a part of The Conjuring universe of films, which also includes the Annabelle movies. The first Nun movie opened with $53.8M this very weekend in September 2018. The last film in the franchise, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, made $24.1M. But that was an HBO Max day and date opening in 2021. Could be back to back $30M+ openings for Sony.

This one takes place in:

1956 - France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun.

We got another sequel dropping this weekend: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. Never saw 1 or 2 but I had a roommate who looks like Nia Vardalos. Maybe that's why. :ohhh: The first one was released back in 2002 and opened with $597K on the way to a whooping $241.4M. The sequel made $17.8M in opening weekend in 2016. That weekend it lost to Batman v Superman's $166M and Zootopia's $24M which came in its 4th weekend. These movies are cheap tho so it should still perform well relative to its production budget. That number hasn't been released yet for this one but the original was made for $5M and the sequel clocked in at $18M.

After travelling to Greece for a family reunion, a woman attempts to locate her deceased father's childhood friends.

Doesn't that sound inviting?

Jawan is the last new release. It's:

a high-octane action thriller which outlines the emotional journey of a man who is set to rectify the wrongs in the Society.

This is some Bollywood shyt from the same studio that dropped Pathaan in January. That did $6.8M from 695 theaters. Jawan will play in 827 theaters.

Another #1 for The Conjuringverse. There's 'Nun 2' It: Weekend Box Office Results (Sep. 8-10)

Our father who art in heaven. Valak be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be Nun on earth as it is in heaven. Valak's kingdom has come as The Nun ll conjured up $32.6M. That's the best Conjuring Universe opening since the $53.M The Nun put up in 2018. It's the 6th best opening in Conjuring history, beating out The Curse of La Llorona ($26.3M) Annabelle Comes Home ($20.2M) and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It ($24.1M).

The Nun had poor legs, only making $63.6M after its $53.8M opening weekend. It had a C CinemaScore so that makes sense. The Nun ll got a C+ so word of mouth should be better. So maybe it can leg out to $75M-$80M?

follow-being-followed.gif

The Equalizer 3 took 2nd with $12.1M in its second frame. That was down 65% from its debut, continuing the franchise 2nd week decline. The Equalizer fell only 45.1% in its 2nd weekend while The Equalizer 2 saw a 61.1% drop. That being said, The Equalizer 2 took $14M so part 3's $12.1M is a good number given The Nun ll's opening. It's made $61.8M after 2 weeks, just 3.7% off The Equalizer 2's $64.2M. This franchise is as consistent as it gets.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 fittingly finished #3 with a surprise $10M. Those BoxOffice Pro guys thought $8M was in the cards. Still, that is 43.8% off MBFGW2's $17.8M opening weekend. That movie had an A- CinemaScore. The threequel only got a B so expect it to fall off into the depths of Hades. :banderas:
