This is where things start getting bleak movie wise. I'm not sure there's anything I want to see until Dune 2 in November if it still comes out

What about The Equalizer 3 or The Creator in September?

'Barbenheimer' Continues to Toy with and Blow away the Competition: Weekend Box Office Results (Aug. 11-13)

After a 1 week respite, Barbenheimer is back on top of the box office.

barbenheimer-barbie.gif

Meg 2 was obviously a threat last week; the same cannot be said of The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

There was never any question if Barbie was going to finish number one. It's 4 for 4 now. With $33.7M, it's up to $526.3M. That puts it at #18 all time at the domestic box office, just behind Rogue One's $533.5M. It's now less than $50M away from overtaking this year's biggest film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and its $574.2M. Warner Bros. execs like

xrd-exrd.gif

Globally, Barbie has pulled in $1.18B. That makes it the 25th biggest movie ever. Next up? Iron Man 3 which made $1.21B. :leon:

kiss.gif

Oppenheimer is back in 2nd place with $18.8M. With $264.2M, it's the 2nd biggest movie to never be number one at the box office, behind Sing's $270.3M. It's almost up to $650M worldwide with $649M. It just passed Thor: The Dark World's $644.7M. Next to fall victim to the atom bomb? The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Pt 2 ($653.4M) and Attack of the Clones ($653.7M).

christopher-nolan-applause.gif

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles jumped up to 3rd place with $15.7M. It was only down 43.8% so it held steady. The last Turtles film, Out of the Shadows, dropped 59.3% in its 2nd weekend when it took $14.3M. With $72.7M, it's less than $10M away from passing Out of the Shadow's $82M total.

leonardo-smile.gif

Sorry, Jada :mjlol:

Meg 2 took a lil tumble from 2 to 4 with $12.7M in its 2nd weekend. That 57.7% drop was in the ballpark of the 53.4% drop The Meg had in its second weekend. With $54.1M after 2 weeks, this Meg trails the original's $83.7M by 35.4%.

look-disappointed.gifm

The Last Voyage of the Demeter opened in 5th place with $6.5M. A rare recent horror misfire only notching a B- cinemascore. That's a little over half of what The Boogeyman did when it opened with $12.3M in June. That movie also got a B- cinemascore but it had good legs as it went on to make $43.2M domestically. Doesn't look like that's in the cards for The Demeter. Maybe if it had Dracula in the title like it does in Australia. But the international numbers haven't been released yet. Who knows? Renfield only opened with $8M. So Dracula ain't it in 2023. :yeshrug:

Notables

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One has found its legs. With another $4.6M, it was only down 29.4% in its 5th weekend. It's up to $522.4M worldwide.

Elemental has reached $150.2M. It's really had great legs with only 19.7% of its gross coming in opening weekend.

What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Aug. 18-20)

This week we can kiss Barbenheimer goodbye cuz Blue Beetle is the new kid on the block. Like a few weeks ago when Meg 2 was released, Warner Bros. will have the top two movies with Blue Beetle and Barbie. Blue Beetle is a DC hero I've never heard of. It's a movie that predates Jimmy Gunn's DC takeover a la The Flash. That movie did a $55M opening. Blue Beetle looks to do less than half that with $26M. In fact, it'll play in fewer theaters than Barbie despite Barbie being in its fifth weekend.

What's the movie about? I'm sure it's some derivative superhero origin shyt:

An alien scarab chooses college graduate Jaime Reyes to be its symbiotic host, bestowing the teenager with a suit of armor that's capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle.

The costume designer from Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder, WandaVision and Werewolf by Night, is the costume designer on this shyt. :jbhmm: I wasn't a fan of any of those costumes except Hela's. But that was more to do with Cate Blanchett.

Becky G. is basically Suit Lady from Spider-Man: Homecoming. And a Brazilian Hermione Granger looking Bruna Marquezine, known for fukking Neymar, playing Jenny Kord.

bruna-marquezine-133hg264rm.jpg

Becky is badder. It's too bad she's in a voice only role. :beli:

EHAT3RdW4AELQKi

Blue Beetle ain't the only new shyt dropping in theaters. We got Strays coming to 3,223 theaters. This is from Universal like Oppenheimer but will be playing in nearly 100 fewer theaters. Same pattern that Warner Bros. went with. This is the animated movie where Jamie Foxx and Will Ferrell voice stray dogs where "An abandoned dog teams up with other strays to get revenge on his former Owner."

Last year, in August, we got DC League of Super-Pets, which opened with $23M. That also had a couple of big names providing voices in The Rock and Kevin Hart. Strays is looking at $13M. Cool note: Harvey Guillen aka Guillermo from What We Do in the Shadows, is in both Blue Beetle and Strays.

The Holdovers

With $541.9M, Barbie is the 16th highest grossing movie all time at the domestic box office. It'll pass The Lion King's $543.6M come tomorrow. It's still playing in the most theaters at 4,003.

With $666.3M in global ticket sales, Oppenheimer has surpassed Interstellar's $647.8M.

T'Cholo? T'Cholno. 'Blue Beetle' is No 'Black Panther:' Weekend Box Office Results (Aug. 18-20)

Blue Beetle superhero-landed with a thud to the tune of $25.4M. Projections were at $31M from The-Numbers on Friday. They were down to $26M at Box Office Pro. Either way, this Beetle didn't fly and left Warner Bros. Blue as it underperformed. So much for that fabled Spanish walk-up business. :skip:

How does this compare to other DC movies of recent memory? Let's take a look. That $25.4 million is the worst opening for a DCEU entry since the pandemic HBO Max day and date Wonder Woman 1984's $16.7 million. James Gunn's, The Suicide Squad, again, An HBO day and date release, did $26.2 million in August of 2021.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, with a $125M budget, just $5M more than Blue Beetle's $120M, was DOA with $30.1M in March. And that movie got an identical B+ cinemascore. It wound up making $57.6M. If Blue Beetle follows suit in terms of legs, it'll end its run, or limp, in this case, with $48.5M. That would be less than The Flash's $55M opening. :wow:

damn-dammit.gif

Green Lantern did $53.1M when it opened in 2011 and that was a failure. :damn:

deadpool-ryan-reynolds.gif

Excluding those couple of pandemic releases, you really have to go back to Catwoman in 2004 ($16.7M) with its $100 million budget to see a DC failure like this.

how-you-doing-oh-yeah.gif

Aquaman 2 up next? Good luck.

blue-beetle-sword.gif

This shyt never hit for me in the trailer, no matter how many times I saw it. :manny:

Barbie continues to hold strong, despite being made of plastic, with $21.5M. With $567.2M, it's about to take down 2023's top-earner, The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $574.2M. Mario screaming at Barbie like Vito Spatafore:

5590eb5c-5468-4ead-9e36-e350b330f0d6_text.gif

With $1.279B worldwide, it's got $176M to go before it overtakes Mario's $1.355B to become 2023's top global earner.

jazzersize-secretartarian.gif

Oppenheimer completed the 'Barbenheimer' 2-3 finish with $10.6M. with 285.2 million it's the sixth highest grosser this year. It just passed Avatar: The Way of Water's $283 million. Avatar was released in 2022 but that's how much it made in 2023. Around the globe it's even better. With $717.8 million, it's the fourth biggest movie of the year. It becomes Nolan's fourth movie to do $700M+ in global ticket sales.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues to show well with $8.4M. That means Mutant Mayhem ($88.1M) has outgrossed the $82M Out of the Shadows produced in 2016.

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-vintage-toys.gif

Strays rounded out the top five with an $8.3M debut. That's a disappointing result for Universal. It got a B+ CinemaScore, same as No Hard Feelings, which was also an R-rated comedy. That comparison seems apt. Both movies are released in 2023. Their production budgets are within $1 million of each other: $45 million for No Hard Feelings and $46 million for Strays. They both opened in just over 3,200 theaters. So it's gotta be a hard pill for those stray dogs to swallow when it opened 48.7% below No Hard Feelings' $15M.

Notables

Meg 2 has crossed the $300M mark worldwide with $316.6M.

With $37.3M, Talk To Me is the 6th highest grossing horror movie of the year, behind The Boogeyman's $43.2M.

Again, Mission: Impossible continues to have legs, with $2.7M from only 1,608 theaters. It finished ahead of Sound of Freedom (2,152 theaters) since its debut 6 weeks ago. It's continued to do well on weekdays and it seems egregious that it just lost 527 theaters. It's made $541M worldwide, which puts it in 8th place for the year, behind the $567.5M of The Little Mermaid.

The re-release of Old Boy saw $495K from 250 theaters. It's made $880K in 5 days.

Black folk are only 12-14% of the population.

WE SHOWED OUT FOR Black Panther 1 on week #1 = 181M Domestic, 331M WW

Latinos are also about 19.1% of the US population and rising... https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/US/RHI725222#RHI725222

So why didn't they get behind Blue Beetle?

Is it the same reason why women didn't watch the Women's World Cup or the WNBA?

hmmm.
