What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Feb. 3-5)​

Is this finally the weekend Avatar 2 falls to #2? It's looking likely with the release of  Knock at the Cabin. This is the new M. Knight flick where "while vacationing, a (Asian) girl and her parents (2 gay white dudes) are taken hostage by armed strangers who demand that the family make a choice to avert the apocalypse." It's got Dave Bautista and his cougar clawed head as well as Rupert Grint in it. Rupert Grint is Ron Weasley, for those who don't know. He's also in M. Night's Servant on Apple TV+, a show that I enjoy. This will be showing in 3,643 theaters. M. Knight's Old opened to $16.8M in July of 2021. This should do more being further removed from the Kung Flu.




Tom Brady, the greatest Quarterback in NFL history, just retired. I've had the pleasure of watching every professional game he's ever played, being a Patriots' fan. I even watched his Tampa Bay games. Even in a down year for him, he was still above league average. This weekend sees his 80 for Brady in 3,912 theaters. In it, "a group of friends made it their life-long mission to go to the Super Bowl and meet NFL superstar Tom Brady." It should get the Tom Brady retirement stimulus and maybe even take second place. shyt, Kurt Warner's American Underdog grossed $5.8M in it's opening weekend. No disrespect to Kurt, but he's not Tom.



Avatar 2, with it's $624.6M, is now the #9 highest grossing domestic movie ever. It won't crack Jurassic World's $653.4M this weekend. It loses the benefit of having all the Premium Large Format screens with Knock at the Cabin taking over.

A Man Called Otto (3,407 theaters) will pass the $50M mark, while Puss in Boots 2 ( 3,285) looks to make it past $150M. M3GAN (2,827 theaters) is closing in on $90M and Gerard Butler's Plane can be seen at 2,208 theaters as it nears $30M.

This weekend also sees the release of Fathom Events' The Chosen's Season 3 Finale in 2,100 theaters. The 2 episode Season 3 premiere generated a $8.7M opening weekend back in November. I'd expect the season finale to do more. Can Jesus outgross James Cameron? He couldn't do more than the Black Panther last time.

M. Knight Knocks on J. Cameron's Cabin; Weekend Box Office Results (Feb. 3-5)​

M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin is here, and for the first time in 8 weeks, Avatar 2, has been knocked from the top spot. In fact,  Knock at the Cabin is 2023's first movie to open number one, and it did so with a $14.2 million weekend. That makes seven number ones for M. Night. Damn who knew.

M. Knight's Old opened number one with $16.8 million in 2021. It went on to make $48.2 million with a 2.86 multiplier. If Knock at the Cabin performs similarly, it could finish with $40.6 million. But that comes down to word of mouth. It had a C on Cinemascore and 64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. After the $1.45 million Thursday previews, It made $3.97 million on Friday and $5.47 million on Saturday, indicating the audience was f****** with it. I was reading a lot of good stuff about Bautista's performance. Might have to check this one out.

Taking second place was Avatar 2. Nope, check that, 80 for Brady with $12.5 million. Another comeback for Tom, not even out the game for one week after his retirement. He just can't lose... except his wife, which, you know, I'm cool with. I liked Bridget better anyway. That's just me.

Paramount was really trying to get the old folks to the theater, running matinee ticket prices this weekend, which will last for the movie's entire run. That means that 80 for Brady actually sold more tickets than Knock at the Cabin. So, in a sense, they both finished number one. Even when Tom loses he still wins. Sorry, @Lootpack.

Them old ladies gave it an A- Cinemascore. It's got a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Apparently it's really well liked. Should I watch this one? As a Patriots' fan, This may be the only time I get to see them win the championship any time soon, even if it is going back in time.

Sinking all the way that third place was Avatar 2 with $10.8 million. That was down 32% from last week. Don't feel bad though, it's $636.3 million domestic total is $23 million shy of passing Titanic's $659.3 million; it's $20.3 million away from passing Titanic's $2.19 billion worldwide total.

After 52 days though, it's well off of Avatar's pace which stood at $629.3 million. Avatar 2 has made more, yes, but remember Avatar opened with $77 million. That's an 8.17 multiplier after 52 days compared to The Way of Water's 4.75. It's still the fourth highest grossing movie ever.

I gave you your props. What's with the hostility?

Puss in Boots 2 is still doing numbers with another $7.9 million. That was only down by 24% from last weekend. Just tremendous holds week in and week out. It's now up to $151.2 million domestic and $368.5 million worldwide.

BTS: Yet to Come to Cinemas rounds at the top five with $6.2 million. This is a concert movie from BTS based on their "free show at Busan's World Expo in October, which welcomed more than 50,000 in-person guests." I only know these dudes from the Samsung commercial.

Didn't hate Knock at the Cabin and didn't love it either. Biggest plus was seeing M. Night actually show restraint in the script, but felt like it also left the film begging for more seasoning.

What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Feb. 10-12)​

We've reached Super Bowl weekend and s*** is popping off. Hell, we've even got The Last of Us releasing their episode tonight so they don't have to compete with the juggernaut that is the NFL.

We've also got a couple of new releases, starting with Magic Mike's Last Dance. Not to be confused with Bull's Mike's Last Dance. This is the third Magic Mike film in Steven soderberg's trilogy. It'll show in 1,600 theaters. Magic Mike XXL opened with $12.8 million back in 2015 en route to grossing 6$6 million domestically. They're predicting Part 3 to open at number one with $12 million. I've never seen a Magic Mike movie and I don't plan on seeing this one.



We've also got the re-release of Titanic, celebrating its 25th anniversary. So James Cameron will have Avatar 2 and Titanic in theaters simultaneously. Two of the top four highest grossing movies of all time. Titanic made $57.8 million ($17.2 million opening) in its 15-year anniversary 3D release in 2012. It made $350.4 million worldwide. The 25 year re-release, sporting a 4K remaster and 3D conversion, is looking at a second place finish at over $8 million, and will play in 2,464 theaters. This m*********** Jim Cameron just can't lose.

We got a new horror movie from Shudder called Consecraion. It looks like a creepy nun, convent, murder mystery, horror movie. The synopsis:

After the alleged suicide of her priest brother, Grace travels to the remote Scottish convent where he fell to his death. Distrusting the Church's account, she uncovers murder, sacrilege and a disturbing truth about herself.

It stars Jenna Malone and Danny Houston and Jenna Malone is using her natural accent, which to me sounds way better than her American one and instantly makes her more likeable. It'll play in 762 theaters.




80 for Brady looks to push past $25 million. It adds 27 venues and will be seen in 3,939 theaters. So Tom Brady will still be amongst the winners on Super Bowl weekend once again. As it should be.

Knock at the Cabin, fresh off of a first place finish, also adds 15 venues and will show at 3,657 theaters. Horror movies typically have a big drop in the second weekend. M3GAN and Missing both had B cinemascores. They bucked the trend with 39.8% and 38% declines in their second weekend. Knock at the Cabin had a C cinemascore and will probably decline more steeply, especially given the added competition. It might not even finish in the top five.

Avatar: The Way of Water ($639.3M) is $20 million behind Titanic ($659.3M) all time domestically. It'll lose ground this weekend with the Titanic re-release.

Mike Still Has a Little Magic Left in his Last Dance; Sinks Titanic: Weekend Box Office Results (Feb. 10-12)​

Magic Mike 3 had a less than magical opening weekend but it was magical enough to notch first place with $8.2 million. That total came from only 1,500 theaters which is good for an average of $5,466 per theater. I'd take that if I was Warner Brothers. Hold up. It's got a production budget of around of around $45 million. Oh no no, I'm not going to take that kind of opening, f*** that. But hey number one is number one.

It's a far cry from Magic Mike's opening of $39.1 million in 2012 and that movie only had a $7 million production budget, on its way to $113.7 million. What about the 2015 sequel XXL? It opened with $12.8 million on a $14.5 million production budget. It went on to make $66 million. The returns are diminishing with each passing release.

At least Selma Hayek is there.

I ain't putting Magic Mike dancing gifs.

Avatar 2 takes second place with $6.8 million. That brings it up to $646.9 million domestically. It's still in 10th place all time and $6.5 million away from passing Jurassic World.

James Cameron's 25-year anniversary of Titanic took third place with $6.4 million. That brings titanic's overall domestic total to $665,763,944, which is 8th all time. It added $15.9 million internationally. It's worldwide total now stands at $2.216B. It put a little distance between itself and Avatar 2's $2.213B. Not a bad weekend for James Cameron. Maybe I'll crack out the moldy, double VHS Titanic for old time's sake, if I can find it and a VCR. Nah, I'll pass. Sorry Kate.

It is Super Bowl Sunday so it's only fitting that Tom Brady makes an appearance. He did with 80 for Brady, which finished with $6 million. That was down by 52.8% from last weekend. I'm going to chalk that up to the old ladies going to see this movie on the weekdays. I'm sure they'll be out in full force starting Monday and definitely on Tuesday for the early bird specials. It almost cracked the $25 million mark, which is the number that refused to pay him in 2020, thus forcing him to Tampa Bay, where he won the Super Bowl. It stands at $24.9 million. Thiiiiis close.

Knock at the Cabin takes 5th place, for now, with $5.5 million. That's a glorious 61% drop, far more in keeping with a typical horror second weekend decline. So that's typical, but remember this s*** finished number one last week. sorry, M. Night. I did enjoy this week's episode of Servant, though.

Ant-Man Becomes the $104M GiANT-MAN: Weekend Box Office Results (Feb. 17-19)​

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is finally here. Paul Rudd did battle with @Kang The Conqueror to the tune of $104M. That's up from 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp's $75.8M and Ant-Man's $57.2M in 2015. That's a win for Quantumania no matter how you slice it because if you adjust Ant-Man 2's opening for inflation, it made $90.3 million. So, relatively speaking, that's a 13.2% increase over Ant-Man 2's opening. Imagine what it would have been if it didn't have a B Cinemascore.

How did It breakdown on the daily? It did $17.5M in Thursday previews, way off Black Panther 2's $28 million pace. It made $46M on Friday, up by 26.7% (12.6% adjusted for inflation) from Ant-Man 2's $33.7M opening Friday. It closed the weekend out with $33.8 million and $24.2 million on Saturday and Sunday. It should pass $118 million tomorrow, President's Day. It's already made $357 million worldwide.

And I still haven't seen a single Ant-Man movie, despite having the first two recorded on my DVR and being a subscriber to Disney Plus. That's just weird. I don't know why that is.

Holding down the second spot for the second weekend in a row was Avatar 2 with $6.1M. That brings it's total to $658.4 million domestically and $2.244 billion worldwide. It's still in 9th place all time domestically. It has passed Titanic's ($2.2M domestic gross this weekend) $2.2430 billion to take 3rd place all the time worldwide. Ho hum.

Magic Mike 2 only dropped off by 35% in its second weekend, taking home $5.4 million to secure a third place finish. That was aided no doubt by a massive expansion of 1,538 theaters. It's now showing in over 3,000 theaters. S*** imagine what they would have did last week if they would have up to theater count. Magic Mike actually has the magic internationally where it's grossed $19.6 million, a million and a half more than it's $18.1 million domestic take.

Puss in Boots 2 just continues to chug along, jumping into fourth place with another $5.2 million in its 9th weekend. That brings it's running totals to $166 million domestically and $422.5 million worldwide. Both totals best 2021's Sing 2's 162.7M and $404.6M domestic and worldwide totals. Nine weekends. Nine lives?

After stumbling to sixth place last weekend, Knock at the Cabin takes 5th with $3.9 million. It was only down 28% and that was with a reduction of 1,056 theaters. It's now across the $30 million domestic threshold at $30.3 million and is closing on $50 million worldwide with $47.2 million. It should be on demand this week because it's already been out for 17 days and it made less than $50 million on opening weekend. That's how it goes now for Universal movies. I'll just wait another month and catch it on Peacock.

It's really not though. I got a year of Peacock for $24. It behooves me to wait for that s*** to hit the cock.

Thrills, Kills and Krills; 'Cocaine Bear' Blows Away the Projections: Weekend Box Office Results (Feb. 24-26)​

A 69.7% drop signifies a second week flop for Ant-Man and the Wasp. That's the worst second week. Decline in MCU history. Still though $32.2 million was enough for a first place finish. 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp dropped 61.6% in its second weekend down to $29 million. Quantumania only outdid its predecessor by $3.2 million in its second weekend? It gets worse when you adjust for inflation. Ant-Man and the Wasp's $29 million in 2018 is actually $34.4 million in 2023. Jesus Christ, that's f****** terrible. I still enjoyed it though. Got my special edition popcorn bucket too. But anyway you slice it the MCU needs

The MCU may be taking its lumps and down in the dumps but Pablo Escobear was doing cocaine bumps. Elizabeth Banks's Cocaine Bear sniffed up $23 million. The coked out bear blew Universal's other animal killer movie, Beast, outta the water. Beast opened with $11.5 million on its way to $31.8 million.

Because it made under $50 million, it'll be on demand in two weeks. It does have a B minus cinemascore. If I go and see this I got to make sure to have a Coca-Cola Slushie to make the cipher complete.

Coming in third with $15.5 million was Jesus Revolution. This faith-based picture from Lionsgate was projected to do $10 million at best. Sweet Jesus. It got an A+ cinemascore, too. Jesus Christ, this guy can't be stopped.

Falling to fourth was Avatar: The Way of Water with $4.7 million. That makes its running total $665.3 million. It remains in ninth place all time domestically behind Titanic's $673.8 million. Its $2.26 billion put it ahead of Titanic's $2.24 billion for the third highest grossing movie of all time. Good for you, Jim.

Puss in Boots 2 rounds at the top five with $4.1 million. And in its 10th weekend at that. Just remarkable. It's now made a total of $173.4 million domestically and $442.5 million worldwide. It was called The Last Wish but what numbers like that, I don't think this is going to be the last ride.

Gave Cocaine Bear a watch last week. It wasn't even all that well-written, yet still had no problem letting the audience know just how silly it could get. It delivered on what it was advertised as and that was a breath of fresh air to me. Glad to see it thriving.
