'The Way of Water' Makes it Rain $63M this New Year's. Water is Wet: Weekend Box Office Results (Dec. 30-Jan. 1)
If you peep the title, it's damn near the same as the one for I wrote for Christmas. That's for good reason. We had a snow storm during Christmas, so Avatar made it snow. We had rain here for New Year's; Avatar made it rain. Oh, an I buried the lede: The Way of Water made $63.4M this holiday weekend. Damn near identical to last holiday weekend's $63.3M.
If y'all read my titles, I like to get creative with it, but this is an example of how repetition can be effective when warranted. From the holidays, to the weather patterns, to the ticket sales, my shyt ain't stale. Water is wet; Avatar prevails. 
The Way of Water now stands at $1.3B worldwide and $421.5M domestic after only 17 days. It took Wakanda Forever 41 days to accomplish the same domestic feat. It's all a win for Disney tho, despite Black Panther lagging behind.
Speaking of Disney, Avatar 2, joins Black Panther 2 ($437.9M) and Doctor Strange 2 ($411.3M) as Disney's third 2022 film to gross $400M+ at the Domestic Box Office. They have three of the four entries, as Top Gun: Maverick was the only other film to fly past the benchmark.
Congratulations to Disney for their box office exploits, or should I say, congratulations to Marvel and 20th Century Formerly Fox Studios? Disney will buy you if you a threat. You a fool if against James Cameron you bet. Water really is wet.

Speed that shyt up. But for real tho, Universal's Puss in Boots bounced back from a "disappointing" debut with a $16.3M weekend. That was up 31.2% from last weekend. I think the weather made a difference. The weather made a difference. It's now made $60.7M domestically and $129.4M worldwide. 
That's how you get your weight up.
Speaking of cats and bounce backs, Black Panther 2 bounced it's way back into the top five, finishing 3rd with $4.8M. A nice 38% improvement over last weekend. As I mentioned before, it's now grossed $437.9M domestically and $818.4M worldwide. That makes it the 6th highest grossing movie in the world in 2022. Somewhat disappointing when you consider how Avatar 2 is already number 2 after 3 weeks.
I Wanna Dance with Somebody? With $4.2M, moviegoers ain't been dancing they way to the theater to see this shyt. This was only down 10.8% from its debut last weekend, so that's a positive. It's made $14.8M domestically and $27.9M worldwide. It's a shame to be smoking on that Whitney pack. Does that mean that we smoking crack?
Rounding off the top five was Babylon with an outstanding $2.7M.
Hey, it's now in the double digits tho with $10.1M. 
Paramount had an immaculate 2022...until this shyt came out and put a damper on their year. They can't all be winners. Let's just remember the good times with Scream, Jackass, (I ain't watch that shyt) The Lost City, Sonic 2, Top Gun 2 and Smile.

Notables Outside The Top Five
Santa and Violent Night fell down the chimney and out of the top five, finishing in 6th place with $2.1M. It's now $2.5M shy of grossing $50M domestically. It's passes $70M worldwide, with $72.8M.
The Menu remained in 9th place but bounced back with $1M, which was up from last weekend's $678K.
It's now made $64.8M worldwide and debuts on HBO Max on Tuesday.A Man Called Otto, in it's Oscar qualifying run, grossed $61K, from 4 theaters in NY and LA. That makes for an impressive $15.2K per theater average. It got a 48 on Metacritic. According to that, it blows. It's at a 67% tho on Rotten Tomatoes. Did y'all catch that line? Do you even know I be rhyming sometime?

Paramount got Scream 6 and Dead Reckoning on the way, so they should shrug that Babylon performance off and do well again this year.
The hysteria I witnessed after Avatar 2’s numbers released opening weekend was hilarious. It’s well on track to hit over 2B. This was always the kind of film to showcase its pull through the legs and not the starting gross. Deadly snowstorms and COVID spikes still ain’t stopping Cameron.

What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Jan. 6-8)
On this second weekend of 2023, Avatar: The Way of Water reigns supreme. It somehow adds 138 venues and will play in 4,340 theaters. It looks to add $36.1M to it's $464.9M total. It overperformed each of the past two weekends so I would look forward to do the same this time around, right? It grossed 13% more than the projection on Christmas weekend and 20% more on New Year's. So, I'd look for it to actually pull in $42M. But, with M3gan dropping this weekend, maybe I'm wrong. Speaking of M3gan, it's finally here, and will play at 3,509 theaters. It's directed by Gerard Johnstone, a guy I've never heard of. He also directed 2014's Housebound, which was apparently a good horror movie. I haven't seen it but I'ma have to check it out now. Universal is expecting a $17M debut but, apparently, the presales are tracking like Smile ($22.6M) and The Black Phone's ($23.6) opening weekends. That's a $23.1M average.
Boxoffice Pro is projecting $24M. If you don't already know, the synopsis is:
A robotics engineer at a toy company builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own.
Let's see if 2023 can keep the momentum from the horror high that was 2022.
No other new releases dropping this week. We have Puss in Boots, playing in 3,913 theaters. It's looking to push past $80M, as it's currently racked up $72.5M domestically.
A Man Called Otto expands to 637 theaters for a semi-wide release, ahead of next weekend's expansion. It looks to sell $2M in tickets. It's at a 67 on the
meter and 52 on Metacritic. So, there's that. Iont know if it's looking good for you, Tommy. Violent Night drops some venues but will play at 1,972 theaters. It's trying to get past the $50M mark. It's currently at a $48.5M running cume. It made $2.1M last weekend; Boxoffice Pro is projecting $1.1M.
shyt, even The Menu, which is now streaming on HBO Max, will play in 800 theaters. With $67.4M worldwide, including $36.8M domestically, it should now have made enough to cover it's $30M production budget.

'M3GAN' Half 'Way' to Walking on 'Water:' Box Office Results (Jan. 6-8)
Four weekends in, four wins for Avatar: The Way of Water. With another $45M (I guessed $42M) it's now passed $500M with a startling $516.7M. Avatar 2 claims the 3rd best 4th weekend ever at the Domestic Box Office, behind American Sniper's $89.2M and Avatar 1's $50.3M. There's a caveat with American Sniper: it's fourth weekend was it's first wide-expansion from 4 theaters to 3,555. So, Avatar 2 actually has the 2nd best 4th weekend. Compared to Avatar 1's inflation adjusted $68.2M, it's 51.5% off that pace.
In any event, it's now the 16th highest grossing movie all time domestically. It's $1.7B worldwide running cume already has it as the 7th highest grossing movie ever, passing Jurassic World ($1.67B) and trailing Spider-Man: No Way Home and it's $1.91B. Jake Sully and his $1.19B foreign total has already outgrossed Spidey and it's $1.10B. And this is only after 24 days.
And they playing The Terminator and True Lies on BBC America right now. Jimmy Cameron taking over the small and big screens. Arnold's stunt double on the horse?
Now to the doll of the hour, M3GAN, debuting in 2nd place with a whopping $30.2M. They weren't lying when they said this shyt's presales were tracking like Smile ($22.6M OW) and The Black Phone ($23.6M OW). It outperformed even those two's opening weekends. That's very impressive when you consider it's B Cinemascore is right in the middle of Smile's B- and The Black Phone's B+. Horror movies tend to have big second weekend declines buts it's got good word of mouth like the aforementioned horror hits.
M3GAN's opening is 27.9% higher than what The Black Phone opened to, and that movie went on to gross $90.1M domestically. It opened 33.6% better than Smile, and that mothafukka went on to gross $105.9M. $150M+ domestic total is not out of the question. Not bad for a $12M movie only showing on 2D screens.
Puss in Boots, which is now on-demand, continues to perform well, with another $13.1M. That was down 22% from last weekend. That brings us running total to $87.7M domestically and $197.4M worldwide. It still got a ways to go if it hopes to catch Puss in Boots 1's $149.2M and $554.9M totals from 12 years ago. But hey, I platinumed Stray; #catset have a day.
A Man Called Otto made a big jump, as it expanded to 637 theaters. That resulted in a $4.2M weekend, up 7,365.7% from last weekend. It's still sitting at a 52 on Metacritic. I don't use this word in my vocab, but the trailers look cringey as fukk. We give Hanks his props, but that's where it stops. Only Otto I acknowledge from the movies last year had tentacles and had Aunt May asking if he drank salt water.
Watch it, Hanks.
Wakanda Forever, rounds out the Top 5 with $3.3M in it's 9th weekend. That brings it's domestic running total to $445.4M and $827.2M worldwide. It's $951K on Sunday marks it's first time with a sub-$1M Sunday finish. After 59 days, Black Panther had already made $674.2M.
Notables Outside The Top Five
Violent Night is thisss close to $50M domestic and $75M worldwide. In fact, its $74.7M worldwide take has surpassed The Menu's $74.6M in 2 fewer weeks.
Strange World, which is streaming on Disney Plus, has now made $70.5M worldwide. Not bad for a $180M animated Disney movie.
