Been listening back to The Pharcyde’s first 2 albums the last couple of days, I can’t decide which album is better

As a huge Pharcyde fan this is a hard one for me. My favorite group is Parliament/Funkadelic so I have a higher tolerance for "zany" music than some. The shyt J-Swift was doing on Bizarre Ride with the drums is incredible. On the D.L., Soul Flower (Remix), Passin Me By, Otha Fish :wow: Such a shame he became a crackhead, the documentary about him is sad as fukk

I love Labcabincalifornia and it has some of my favorite songs of all time like Runnin but I never loved the end stretch of tracks to be honest. The Hustle through The E.N.D. are good but don't match the heights of the album, and it has some straight up mid like Groupie Therapy. I also prefer the She Said and Y? (It gotta be like that) Dilla remixes to the album versions.

I pick Bizarre Ride by a hair because I can find Dilla piff in a lot of places (like Fantastic Vol. 2 or Like Water for Chocolate) but Bizarre Ride is a singular showcase from a group at the height of their powers and a producer who could have been one of the greats if his demons didn't get the best of him.

All of this

I agree

Plus, I love the overall Jazz sampled based and feel of Bizarre, I think it’s more tighter and held together with their zany personality and bright production. That album has aged so gracefully

Swift’s story was a sad one; glad he finally got clean and seems to be doing alright last I heard

It's not easy to choose between those two.

Both are classic, to me. But Labcabincalifornia was damn near a masterpiece.

Literally just had it on the other day.

:ohlawd:

Facts, it’s like night and day

Both are unique in their own ways

A damn shame they couldn’t keep it together at the height of their artistic merit

Bizarre and its not even close for me.......2nd joint is a decent 4 mic album IMO but I almost never go back to it

Bizarre is a masterpiece.....soul flower remix, oh shyt, ect. ect. none of these joints ever got old for me

"4 better or 4 worse" is the most underrated song of the 90s and my fav west coast song of all time so I'm a bit bias

its up there with "3 feet high" from de la

Word bruh

Can we talk about how 4 Better Or 4 Worse is not only a GOAT but the music video is so well shot. Who directed it? I like how it was shot like a grainy old film and the concept of the wedding, the pimp and then the deranged man. It’s like a short film

one of my favorite beats ever :wow:

Yea Fat Lip and Tre got in a fight over that beat because Fat Lip swapped out Dilla drums for his drums because he thought the drum pattern was off beat. Dilla had programed the drums not in a standard 2 or 4 bar loop, but in a long sequence that didnt repeat until the twentieth bar and without time correction. Tre was about to stab Fat Lip with a knife. The group told Fat Lip to change that shyt back and put Dilla drums back on the track.

Dill actually had to go in and redo the whole pattern because Fatlip straight up erased it, too. And you can hear it on the instrumental version that Mad Skillz played. The timing of the kicks are just ever so slightly different since that's the original one Dilla did

DETROIT (Do Every Thing Right Or It's Trouble)
The first one is what I grew up with but sounds madd dated. “Passing me by” and “oh shyt”

The second one is not dated at all and have “Runnin” and “Drop” and they were flowing effortlessly on Dilla beats.

I gotta go with #2. But if you pick the debut I’m not mad

Delicious Vinyl did they thing
