Thousands of people have taken to the streets in protest today after two international rugby players were cleared of rape.

Irish sportsmen Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding were acquitted by a jury of eight men and three women yesterday following a nine-week trial at Belfast Crown Court.

They were accused of sexually assaulting a woman when they went back to Jackson's flat after a night out in the capital city.

The court heard the pair were in a WhatsApp group which discussed having a 'spit roast' and said sex with the woman was 'like a merry-go-round'.


But just hours after they were cleared, in response to the wider issues raised by the case and in support of the woman and others in a similar position, thousands of people tweeted #IBelieveHer.

The hashtag was trending in the UK, Ireland and worldwide and this afternoon a rally outside the Laganside courthouse took place along with others in Derry, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dublin. Tonight a much smaller group of protesters have gathered in Marble Arch in London.

This story is disgusting, they raped this woman at a party and colluded to fabricate an alibi after she expressed that it was non consensual sex. She was bleeding soo badly after, that the cab driver checked the seat after she got out. One of the young men went home with her in the cab to make sure she didn’t go straight to the police.



This young girl followed protocol and did everything correctly, sat in court for 9 weeks while they passed her bloody underwear around and these men still were still exonerated after this.



Women are raped everyday and men get away with it. Karma is a bytch though and they will get their comeuppance.


And if she got pregnant from this rape and aborted it she would have gone to jail because abortion is illegal in Ireland.

People do desperate things when they are guilty of a crime they are accused of otherwise why go the extra lengths to bury a body or the other things people do to get rid of evidence.

She is saying it was non consensual sex, they are ladding about saying they spit roasted some girl, one of the men accompanied her home to make sure she didn’t go to the police then reported back to the group. Sounds suspect to me. If I was having sex with some strange girl and she started to bleed I might be a bit put off. One of the other guys saw what was going on and asked if he could join in. That is loutish behaviour.


The case is not an open and shut case as she didn’t call for help when people entered the room. But you never know how people react out of fear.


She is saying they raped her and I believe her. I have to because of the thousands of women that are raped demonised, punished and called liars each year; the justice system has failed this woman.

Most rapists don't think they're actually rapists. They rationalize their actions by convincing themselves that "she wanted it" or "she didn't fight hard enough". Looking at some of the evidence it's pretty clear this woman was raped.
