EASTVALE: Man accused of shooting at deputies is arrested

A man fired at sheriff's deputies who went inside an Eastvale house to investigate a possible shooting Monday, July 4, and when other law enforcement agencies came to their aid, two officers ended up shooting at the suspect, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

No one was injured, although the suspect was taken to the hospital as a precaution, sheriff's officials said in a news release.

Thomas Daniel Williams, 40, of Eastvale, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and booked into jail Tuesday morning, with bail set at $1 million, jail records show.

Deputies were summoned to a home in the 5700 block of Westchester Way about 3:50 p.m. by Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters who there responding to a call of a possible overdose, according to the news release. When they arrived, deputies learned that a gunshot had been heard inside the home and it was believed someone may have been shot.

The deputies entered the home and found only Williams, who was inside a room and refused to come out.

Williams fired "multiple rounds" through the door separating him from the deputies "without provocation," the release said.

Deputies retreated, but couldn't leave the second level of the home for fear of being shot, Deputy Armando Munoz said.

More sheriff's deputies, a Riverside Police Department helicopter and officers from the Corona Police Department were called to help the deputies get out of the house.

Officers attempted to negotiate with Williams, but he refused commands, the release said.

Eventually – the release did not say how much time had passed – a Corona police officer and a county sheriff's deputy fired their weapons.

What specifically prompted them to shoot remains under investigating, Munoz said.

Both have been placed on administrative leave. Their names were not released.

Following the officer-involved shooting, Williams was checked out at the hospital. Booking logs say he was formally arrested at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Sheriff's forensic investigators were still at the site Tuesday afternoon, and the end of the Westchester Way cul-de-sac remained blocked by yellow crime-scene tape.
