Good question, for soccer fans, jogging around a big field kicking a ball for 3 hours and scoring once every other or two games is "athletic"

Or maybe they mean when those guys balance the ball on their heads and bounce it up or down or when they bounce it back and fourth on their toes 10 times. ...it's a sport for sure, but to compare them athletically to the most gifted skilled positions in football (WRs, RBs, FSs, CBs, FS's) and NBA PGs and SGs is just ridiculous the more that I think about it.
:lawd:like i keep saying hoops is the gawd of all ball.games*

I feel like all the running/sprinting. I mean obviously both take some degree of athleticism, but soccer might take more based on the endurance piece. Way more breaks in Basketball, but I think Basketball requires much more skill. It's just my opinion though, no need to beat yourself up over it.

This thread is such an American vs The World thread :russ:

Only the top skilled athletes survive in soccer. In basketball, you can get by on athleticism and size.
That’s because of the nature of the sport. Basketball requires a lot of jumping and contorting of the body so naturally the most athletic are able to thrive. The skill level from truly elite players is comparable to football though: the way Curry shoots, Kyrie finishes, Bron passes, CP3 dribbles, is no different than the skills Neymar, Messi, Salah, and Ronaldo posses.

I suppose how you decide which requires more athleticism/skill would depend on personal biases/ how much you watch either sport

But given the enormously bad basketball opinions that flood the coli sports forum I would put very little faith in the assessments many of you make

I will say this.....people are vastly underestimating what it takes to be an upper tier professional soccer player...especially if you play for a pass heavy possession driven offense.

Your post doesn't have *any* logic or common sense applied to it :manny:. You're just passionate soccer fans nothing else matters in your world

Breh, do you read posts or just skim through them? :dahell:

I'm a fan of both sports. Never took anything away from basketball. Its a great sport. But as a fan of ALL sports, there's no way you can take away from the athleticism needed for soccer...in fact ask players like Olajuwon, who god-level footwork and low-post moves are a DIRECT result of his exposure to soccer or Steve Nash who's vision and ability to read the game is a DIRECT result of growing up playing soccer.

Also, BECAUSE the margin for error is so small in soccer, one goofy ass slow dude gets beat by a cutting winger...the match is lost...meanwhile Sean Bradley can lumber his ass into the NBA and make a career of getting dunked on and stay in the league for a decade.

There's more drama in soccer, not to say there isn't in basketball...but there's a reason people are checked out of most of the season until like April.

and @K.O.N.Y all of those are great examples....wonderful players that I can't recall anyone talking shyt about. And that's my point. All the basketball fans in here openly shytting on a sport they freely admit they know nothing about and don't play...while soccer brehs have conceded the fact basketball takes great skill and athleticism. If anyone's taking the elitist road right now its the basketball brehs in here....

can't help but feel like they don't know the greatest of all time is black.

Scoring happens so much in basketball that it loses almost all relevance, literally pick the ball, run to the other side of the court, score, pick the ball, run to the other end, score, rinse repeat for 200+ plus times WOW:mjlol:

Ping pong :ohhh:

Let me add this

Finishing under duress in the box in soccer is much harder than finishing in the paint in basketball

My take is that the sports are so close in terms of skill and athleticism required to play them at the top level that you could argue one or the other to me and on a given day I might be inclined to agree with either side of the debate

By the way the skills required to play soccer translate immensely well to basketball

Better yet, If you're 6'10 and up, you don't even have to be that skilled to make a roster at the high school/colligate level.

how many overweight soccer players have you seen??

how many soccer players in their mid 30s do you see playing top flight soccer .....

dudes that only play 48 minutes with multiple breaks and time outs on a court less than a quarter of a size of soccer field ... lol keep kidding yourself

soccer players play double that amount of time, a full 90 mins plus extra time

That’s nice except basketball is only 5 players on the court playing defense and offense in a very confined space.

Totally different ressources needed. Explosivity and fast twitch fibers are a must in basketball whereas conditionning and endurance are necessary to last 90 minutes with only one break in football.

What's funny is I can last forever on a basketball court but get tired quickly playing football while it's the reverse for my partners who play football regularly.

All I know is there ain't no Tim Duncan in football... By 30 you're not good anymore. Basketball players have way more longevity...
But on the other hand, the overall atheticism needed for basketball player is unequalled... Running, jumping, sitting in a chair, decelerating...

It's a draw for me.
