Looking through how these teams got here on wiki, at the path that Japanese teams have to go through to get their automatic spot.
Everybody else has a round robin stage followed by knockouts, they just throw 16 teams into a high-pressure single elimination fight and they have to play 4 rounds over 2 Saturdays. No room for any errors.

you have to win your country, then your region. Japan doesn't have to win a region to advance because there are so many teams.
