My expectations were high for this based off the ratings; I was not disappointed.
The premise for this horror movie is perfect:
Don't go in that house.
That's what we all say when we watch horror movies. Don't go in that house! Run! What are you doing?! Only, this time, Tess is supposed to be in that house. She booked that house. She has an important interview and needs that place to stay. That house that she shouldn't go in being her Airbnb justifies her initial actions really well, for a horror movie.
I loved the tonal shift halfway through. Loved it. I knew that Justin Long was in the movie but while I was watching it, he never even crossed my mind. So when he popped up I was like
He played his part perfectly. He was back in "Tusk" mode with this role. The nonchalant toss of Tess' laptop onto the bureau was perfect.
He was so great in his role that I was rooting for him despite his scumbaggetry. And I was
disappointed when he got done like the mutant in The Descent. I really wanted him to live.
That's a testament to Justin Long's likeability.
Getting chased by Mutant Melisandre?
I really liked this and can see why it got :35stars: I have no problem with that. I've never seen anything from this Zach Cregger but I was impressed. I liked the elements he took from other horror movies like "The Hills Have Eyes," "Vacancy," and "The Descent." I look forward to more from this dude.
What a great year for horror it's been. I gotta thank the Druids and HBO Max for dropping this right before Halloween. This did a great job of washing the stench of Michael Myers and Halloween Ends' rotting corpse away.
