Team Porter: Haymon Killed Broner Rehydration Clause

By Rick Reeno

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Kenny Porter, father and trainer of Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16KOs), advised BoxingScene.com that his son's manager/adviser Al Haymon was the person who nixed the rehydration clause for Saturday's fight with Adrien Broner (30-1,22KOs).

The fight had a catch-weight clause in place for 144-pounds, which Broner requested. Originally there was a rehydration clause for a second-weighin on Saturday morning, where Porter would be allowed to weigh more than ten pounds above the contract limit.

Kenny said they finally received the contract for the fight, and there was no rehydration clause in the language - but he knew that was coming ahead of time because Haymon called him.

"Al called me and told me not to worry about that [the rehydration clause]. He said 'don't listen to what nobody says because you heard it from me,"' Kenny told BoxingScene.com.

Shawn, who says the last time he weighed 144 was at 14-years-old, expects to only come up by ten pounds or so by fight night.

"I was surprised that I feel so strong, and I feel good, because I haven't made 144-pounds in so long," Shawn said.

Neither fighter had any problems making weight. Broner stepped on to the scale and came in at 143.5-pounds, while Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16KOs) was half a pound more at 144-pounds.

The fight will headline the next edition of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC on NBC) on Saturday night.

Porter gonna come in as a Super Middleweight like Maidana did:wow:

He has a home...Cincinnati aka US Bank Arena.

This fight should've been at The Q though:snoop:

It's kinda like when Arum stupidly had Crawford fight in NYC for his last fight instead of back in Nebraska:wow:

Floyd wasnt a draw until he fought ODLH as well though:yeshrug:

Crawford next fight is in Nebraska... I get what Arum was doin tho trying to get him more exposure... Can't fight only in Nebraska

AB vs Porter most definitely should a been in Ohio

Any other big fight in Ohio tho :camby: ...im sure you'd have a hard time convincing a top fighter/ draw to fight AB in Ohio

He needs a home away from home someplace close enough where his Ohio fans can travel but far enough where other fighters won't think they'll get the shaft on the cards

Swift got the Barclays
Gatti had Atlantic City
Cotto MSG
Mexicans got Texas N stubhub

AB was fighting at the boardwalk for DeMarco N Rees maybe push him there

Yep. Atlantic City should be it then being that it's only 6 1/2 hours away.

It ain't gonna be no Ohio people in the stands at the #BattleOfOhio :snoop:

Man I still can't call it because of this catchweight.

If the fight where at 147, I would just flat out pick Porter. It's very obvious that Broner struggles with pressure. Not even just the Maidana fight, but other fights where guys succeeded in spurts.

However, he's still too good to give that kind of weight advantage to.

On paper, this has a 7-5 type of feel to it that can go either way. If it's a close fight, I believe that catch weight can make a difference in who is able to gut out some of the close rounds. That's why it's hard not to pick Broner.

No pick from me on this one. I'll just enjoy the fight

it all comes down to porter really. broner is the same fighter he was vs maidana. the same guy who was gettin tagged by molina and paulie. porter has to make broner uncomfortable from the opening bell. if he can do that, broner will fold. porter doesn't have the punching power that maidana does, but he's physically stronger than maidana. if the weight doesn't effect him too much I think broner will have a hard time keeping him away.
