Ok

Broner still a bytch nikka for this...

:heh:

You know, Shawn Porter could've just fought Keith Thurman at the full 147lb limit for the WBA Championship instead of agreeing to fight a Junior Welterweight at a catchweight:mjpls:

I think Porter should have passed on this fight. He let his desperation for a big fight agree to terms that aren't in his favor at all. He has a name at WW, so other opportunities would have come up.

It's not like I'm even high on AB like that, it's just at this level, unless it's a mayweather or pacquaio, you don't give someone that big of a weight advantage.

Porter fine with Vegas hosting 'Battle of Ohio' with Broner
Posted by: Jake Donovan on 6/16/2015

By Jake Donovan

From the moment the discussion began of a potential clash between Adrien Broner and Shawn Porter, many in the boxing world wondered where in Ohio such a bout would take place.

There was speculation that it could land at a venue such as the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. Broner has played the riverfront venue in televised wins over Vincente Rodriguez, Vicente Escobedo and Emmanuel Taylor, the latter having taken place last September with more than 8,000 in attendance for his homecoming.

Perhaps it could have been staged at Wolstein Center on the Cleveland State University campus, less than an hour from Porter’s hometown of Akron. The college basketball arena in downtown Cleveland has played host to several boxing events in the past, including Porter’s lone pro fight in his home state—a 10-round decision win over Russell Jordan more than five years ago in an ESPN2-televised headliner.

With such hopes came disappointment expressed once the in-state rivalry was dispatched to Las Vegas, Nevada. Their scheduled 12-round bout—to be fought at a maximum catchweight of 144 lbs.—will headline this weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in the latest installment of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on free-to-air NBC (Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET).

The setting doesn’t at all bother Porter, even if it means not being able to directly interact from his legion of fans back home in Akron.

“I don’t just represent Akron; I’m a Northeast Ohio guy. It’s a blessing to represent Northeast Ohio and do that with pride,” Porter (25-1-1, 16KOs) proudly proclaimed, before explaining the business side of his forthcoming fight. “Everything I’ve learned, I’ve learned from my dad. If you want to improve and do everything at the higher level, you have to leave home alone.

“Las Vegas is the place to be. We moved out here to two years ago to train. A fight of this magnitude is taking place where it’s supposed to be.”

The fight is Porter’s second since the lone loss of his career, a 12-round decision to Kell Brook last August to bring an end to his welterweight title reign. He has since rebounded with a 5th round stoppage of late replacement Erick Bone this past March, which was immediately followed by negotiations—and an eventual agreement—for a showdown with Broner, who has won three straight since his lone loss suffered at the hands of Marcos Maidana 18 months ago.

Where the fight takes place doesn’t change his desire to not only beat Broner (30-1, 22KOs), but also claim status as Ohio’s finest.

“After the fight, we can talk about bragging rights for Ohio,” Porter quipped.

I still don't understand why he capitulated to so much. I could someone like a Zab Judah agreeing to anything to get a main event shot on network TV but Porter is coming off one loss to Kell Brook (which is nothing to be ashamed of) and would seem to have more options available to him so he wouldn't have to be desperate.

Adrien Broner: 'I will defeat Shawn Porter'

i

Former three-division titlist Adrien Broner will look for his fourth straight victory when he faces former welterweight titlist Shawn Porter on Saturday.

Broner-Porter
Where: MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas
When: Saturday
TV: NBC, 8:30 p.m. ET

The Premier Boxing Champions main event takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (NBC, 8:30 p.m. ET) and will be contested at a catchweight of 144 pounds.

Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) was a recent guest on ESPN.com's Making The Rounds where he talked about preparing for Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) and what's at stake in this fight.

Why was the catchweight necessary for this fight?

"I mean, it's something that we both agreed on. It's signed and that's the weight for the fight."

You are known for your colorful antics in and out of the ring. We have seen you rap in the past. What can we expect from you against Porter?

"You never know. Some of these things I make up right before I enter the ring. Right now I'm just staying focused and waiting for [Saturday]."

You put on a boxing exhibition against John Molina Jr. in March, saying afterward, "The last time I fought for the fans, I suffered my first loss." What did you mean by that statement?

"When I was in there [against Marcos Maidana] I was trying to be the tougher fighter. I was getting a lot of criticism. That's when I used to look on the social websites and see what they were saying but now I don't pay attention anymore. I just do me and get my victory."

You're 3-0 since suffering that defeat to Maidana. In what ways have you grown as both a fighter and a person since that fight?

"Now I seen both sides. I seen the side when everything is going good and I seen the side when things go bad. I definitely don't like the side when things are going bad, so now everything is back on track and we are going to keep it that way."

How important will it be for you to be the boxer as opposed to the puncher against Porter?

"It's very important. Even though God gave me the gift of both -- I can punch and I can box -- I'm going to win this fight being the smarter fighter and more skillful fighter. Skills pay the bills."

What is the toughest challenge Porter brings to the ring?

"Honestly, he brings an awkward smile. [He laughs.] I mean, he brings a lot to the table. He's a solid fighter, a world-class fighter and a former world champion. I'm going to be taking this fight serious and am not looking past him. I will defeat Shawn Porter on [Saturday]."

Why will you be the one raising your hand on fight night?

"Because I'm AB, always balling, man. A lot of people say that they really have the best of both worlds that they can box and punch. But I really can box and punch and a lot of people really haven't seen everything that Adrien Broner can do yet. On [Saturday] you'll see a side of Adrien Broner you won't want to miss, so don't miss the fight."
