In an era that's full of blatant examples of racism this was like a crown jewel. He was wearing a jacket that Baltimore officials often wear during construction or emergency press conferences, yet was attacked for dressing inappropriately. The initial memes included wording that suggested he speaks like an 1980s ebonics caricature but he's actually "well spoken" and sounded professional. He even opened his comments by asking for prayers and even that appeal to common religious customs wasn't enough.
